At least they can't stop us from buying meat at the grocery store and feeding it raw. My dogs can still have the same thing I'm having for dinner. Well, except that I'm cooking mine. I better get out to my organ supplier soon, though, and stock up the freezer.

eek OMD! The FDA is so ridiculous. I love pre-made raw! I will have to get a bone grinder or something because Brody totally doesn't get the whole "chew on bone" concept. BOL!

MAN! That just stinks. So many people have switched to raw because of the medallions because they are so convenient.

Just another example of the government trying to step all over our rights. Next thing you know all the chicken you buy will have to be precooked for us humans as well, because the government thinks people are too stupid to breath without the legislating it... (here in NJ they actually wasted time with a bill to ban fornicating with animals... uh duh!... give me a break... aren't there bigger fish to fry than that and is it really such a problem that they have to make a law about it, for cripes sake?)

Why can't they spend their time dealing with real issues? Because those are too challenging for them, they have to step all over the little guy instead.

I haven't heard anything from my reps. Actually, Stella and Chewy's was in my store last week trying to get me to bring in their products, which seems a little strange if they knew of some impending raw ban.

Here's a statement the FDAissued on July 27, 2007

"The FDA does not advocate a raw meat, poultry or seafood diet for pets, but is stepping up its efforts to minimize the risk such foods pose to animal and human health because we understand that some people prefer to feed these types of diets to their pets..."

Here is a copy of the draft guidance the FDA is developing for the raw pet food industry:

wow tikka...that article is saying that raw meat is dangerous to humans and therefore shouldnt be fed to animals...um hello! what about the raw meat humans touch to feed themselves? and i wanna see the articles that say that alot of dogs died from food borne illnesses...

wow "suitable for use in animal feeds" so rotten? feeding cow cow and chicken chicken? huh...that makes sense....

pasturizing? that kills all the good stuff!!!

HACCP plan...i think everyone that produces food has to have one...

that part that says there has to be a "safe handling guidline" do they have that on human foods?

i LOVE the part about bones...i mean really...the people MAKING this food arent going to put huge shin bones in....

i want to know those "good manufacturing practices" they use in human foods....are they really antibioticing and pasturizing when they say they arent?

oh wow....still feeding raw!!! still going to consume raw meat myself...

Actually, most of the raw meat I buy DOES have proper handling procedures on it. I usually just laugh at them.

I know the world is full of idiots. . .but why must everything be dumbed down for them? Ohh yeah. . .our lawsuit-happy society. *Sigh*

OK, maybe I am missing something here, but from what I can tell they are looking to put the same safety and labeling rules around meat prepared for our dogs as they do for us. I don't see why this is a bad thing? shrug I myself have always been wary of the conditions under which these premade raw dog foods have been prepared, who really knows what's making it's way into that meat?

Also, this is just a guidance doc, "FDA’s guidance documents, including this guidance, do not establish legally enforceable
responsibilities. Instead, guidances describe the Agency’s current thinking on a topic and should be viewed only as ecommendations, unless specific regulatory or statutory requirements are cited. The use of the word “should” in Agency guidances means that
something is suggested or recommended, but not required."

I actually don't disagree with most of what is written in the guidelines except for the "Nutritional Adequacy" paragraph: Nutritional adequacy: Manufacturers of products intended to be offered as the sole source of nutrition for pets should substantiate the nutritional adequacy of these products. There is significant risk of nutritional deficiency or excess when such products are improperly formulated. Calcium and phosphorus are often deficient in foods based on raw meat, and should be supplemented accordingly. In addition to the risk of physical trauma or impaction, large pieces of bone may not allow for efficient digestion and absorption, possibly resulting in
nutritional deficiency when bone is intended to serve as a source of dietary calcium. Essential fatty acids and some trace minerals may also be deficient. Alternatively, foods based on raw meat could be excessive in vitamin A if liver is used as a major ingredient and cause vitamin A toxicity if fed for extended periods of time. Other fat soluble vitamins may be either excessive or deficient as well.

Now that's just silly! confused
