Just a quick question on weaning. Right now they are a week and a day old so I know they are not ready. just wanting info early to prepare myself when it is time to wean. When it's time to wean my orphan puppies from the puppy formula should I use the cheap brand of purina puppy chow or should I use a premium puppy food like wellness or blue buffalo? Also should I start weaning them when they are 3 1/2 weeks old or wait til they're 4 weeks old? I read on the internet that premium puppy foods are too high in protein to wean puppies from? Is that true. When I got luna when she was 3 weeks old i was feeding her earthborn holistic puppy food and she seemed to do great on it. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can start as early as 3 weeks. We used good quality canned food, rice cereal for infants and milk substitute mixed into a gruel and slowly droped the rice cereal content and substituted ground kibble mixed with water to soften it along with less milk substitute. I also used this method when I helped kittens wean from their Mom and had some of the healthiest kittens the vet had ever seen.hugwishes

I started providing ground kibble mixed with warm formula when my puppies were about 2.5 weeks old. They mostly played in it, but they did start to try it. They at that until about 6.5 weeks when I switched to soaking the kibble in hot water to soften it and adding canned food. I've never heard of premium kibble being too rich for puppies. In fact, Dogster Toto, who has been helping me out a lot, told me she weans her pups on to freeze-dried raw food. YUM! I weaned my pups onto Fromm puppy food. They are 8 weeks old now. Now they're eating Taste of the Wild's lamb formula, which is All Life Stages. I do mix it with a little bit of canned to get them started. I tried to feed them a donated bag of Eukanuba Naturally Wild, but they won't touch it. None of the dogs in my house are interested in it, so I am not sure if it's just weird, or if there's something wrong with it.

I was very lucky to have a mom who really self-weaned her puppies. She just decided that around 5 weeks she didn't want to nurse them any more and she wanted to hang out with me. I had to convince her to lay down long enough for the puppies to eat. At first the puppies tried to hold out until they got to nurse, but I backed off on convincing mom to nurse them and increased the puppies' activity level. Then they decided to eat more smile.

Now that they are 8 weeks she's totally dried up and she's going in to be spayed on Friday.

Sarah I forgot you had just fostered a litter recently. No mommy here. Puppies were abandoned by mom's owner at the back door to the vet's office Miska & Luna's Mom works for. Good to know that the better kibbles are just as good for young pups though. Thanks Again.

Just wanted to post separately that I love the combined photo and page. I did that as well as keeping both individual pages. I normally post as both simply to avoid confusion and not post by each dog differently in the same thread. I did it so Mika = Kai= same person. The photo by the way is beautiful.

Sarah, that was frozen raw, not freeze dried. Freeze dried is rather coarse and way, way expensive!!!

When we had a litter of puppies we did the dry puppy food mixed with hot water and blended it in the blender until it was a mushy gruel substance. They got weenend about 3.5 to 4 weeks old. They were eating dry puppy food around late 4 weeks and by 5-6 they were all on dry puppy food. Feeding them was super fun, they heard the food pans and would go nuts crying and wining wanting to be fed.

cant spell to much today red face

Sorry for posting so late in the week. Been a very busy lady between being a mom around the clock to these furballs and doing my internship. Everyone I know how to make a gruel since i had to basically wean luna. I had gotten her when she was 3 weeks old. Yes i know it's young for her to be away from mom that early, but in my opinion she was better off with me than the ppl who owned the mom. She is now 7 months and perfectly healthy. I was just wondering about what age I should wean them since i know different ppl have different preferences on weaning. And I was also just wondering what type of food should i use for the gruel. Thinking about going with wellness or bllue buffalo puppy to make the gruel out of.

M&K - I actually got the idea about the page and photo from you. I thought it was a good idea especially if i want to post under both of them.
