To change or not... Maya's food! HELP!

Got a new, young, furry love in your life? This is the place for you to ask all of your questions-big or small! So Maya is about to turn 8 months old and she has been eating what her breeder recommended... dry food for puppies by Natura.

I had a really hard time finding a store that carried the brand but I did... 6 months later, I am done with that huge bag... and now what? Should I continue with the same brand or change? I had to travel over 30 miles to get it.

I read the article well written by Sedona on all kinds of food, but am still confused.

My vet told me to feed my dry food, because as a Maltipoo she will have a "yucky" mouth/teeth, if I feed her can food. My Arthur died of mouth cancer and I used to feed him a mix of dry and canned.

He also said I should by what is available at any supermarket... than again, the article said that the food at the supermarkets is really not the best.

Don't know what to do and have to come up with a decision very, very soon... like yesterday!

Help.

Thanks.

As far as I know, all the brands made by Natura (Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise) are good foods. Natura was bought out by P&G, but so far the quality doesn't seem to have suffered. If your dog is doing well on the food you're feeding and you'd rather not switch, I'm sure you could order more online, often with free shipping.

Alternatively, have you looked at the Dog Food Adviser or Dog Food Analysis sites to help you choose a new food?

Kibble honestly doesn't do a whole lot to clean teeth, so I would't rely on it. Most dogs eat dry food and most dogs end up with teeth covered in plaque. An occasionally raw meaty bone and/or brushing her teeth will do a lot more to keep them clean.

* Maya's present food is Puppy Formula 31/20 Loyall by Nutrena (sorry, oversite on my side).

Looking over the ingredients list, Loyall doesn't appear to be particularly high quality. It doesn't contain a whole lot of meat, and instead has lots of grains and corn. My recommendation would be to change her food to something meatier.

Addie eats Fromm Puppy Gold. She loves it. I highly recommend it; Fromm is a wonderful brand and is easily accessible online if you can't find it locally. They also send out coupons for free bags every few months. If you can find it locally, your retailer may offer their loyalty program: buy 12 bags, get one free.

Hi Moms... so I went to Petco and got Maya her treats... that Frankie recommended a while ago and loves them.... Than I stopped at the food aisle and OMG! Talk about not to know where to start.

So after work, I stopped at a local pet store; spoke with a young man and showed him the list of good foods I printed from here.
The one that kept on jumping at me, was by Blue Buffalo, which the young man recommended. He was nice enough to give me a sample bag that I brought home to see if Maya would "buy it".

Well, I gave Maya two pieces to try and she liked it. Than, I mixed just a little bit of the new dry food for puppies with the old; Maya walked right away to her plate and started taking a mouth full of food... drop it on the floor, and choose only the new pieces of Blue Buffalo for puppies. SHE LOVED IT... AND EAT THEM ALL! Left pretty much all of the "old" food back.

She is 7 and 1/2 months old, and I don't know if it is because it is too hot but she has only be eating once a day. It's either that or she was already too tired of her first dry food. So what do you think? Blue Buffalo it is?

I will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Once again, thanks so much.

PS: Thanks to Onyx... here's the link where I got the idea for new food(s) trial for Maya:

I'm not against BB but I have read a lot of complains about it. Most of them didn't find it good for their dogs. I also believe that, because of the past recall that the company had because of unhealthy levels of vitamins in their food.

I have fed my dogs the entire Blue Buffalo line with no issues what-so -ever. If Maya likes it,does well on it,and it is not causing problems for her,I see no harm in it. They have had one recall in the past 6 years and that was in fact a batch that had too many vitamins accidentally mixed into that batch. Whatever you choose to feed is of course your choice,my criteria is and always has been, will they eat it? do they do well on it? am I satisfied with how they are doing on it? Does the vet think they are healthy and doing well? Each individual dog will react to foods differently. That is why I value how they seem to be doing on it,and how the vet feels their health is on it. It can also be the most wonderful dog food ever created but if they won't eat it,it really isn't doing them any good is it? Blue Buffalo is rated as a good quality brand, for me mine do quite well on it,and they like it. If you are happy with it,and Maya is happy and doing well on it,try keeping her on it,if not then you need to find something that meets your criteria.

Day two of BB trial with Maya... she did it again... took a mouth full of mixed food, dumped on the floor, choose BB over the old food and that's it.

I guess I will finish the little trial bag and take it from there. I got a good review from the kid at the local pet store regarding Merrick and Canidae (please forgive the spealling, I hope it's right); he said these are not carried by all stores and Canidae is really, really, expensive ;o(
