New question about parvo!

Got a new, young, furry love in your life? This is the place for you to ask all of your questions-big or small! Just remember that you are receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a vet or behaviorist! Most important is to remember to have fun with your new fur baby.

Need to take a deep breath here! I'm totally stressing myself out about this!

My question, if anyone knows, is what % of ADULT dogs with no symptoms would be shedding this?

I was supposed to work for a private group home the weekend after getting my puppy (he'll be 10.5 weeks by then and have had his first vax around 8 weeks) and they have an old 'farm dog' (Golden lab they, IIRC, rescued from one of their kids who couldn't handle it - I would assume that he got his puppy vaccines) and also she told me they are dog sitting for someone (unknown) during the previous month for a week - so their droppings will be still in the lawn, I would guess. I'm pretty sure these are also adult dogs. I can call to find out if they were vaxed.

If all these dogs had their puppy vaccines, what are the chances that there could be parvo? Or if they weren't vaccinated but are adults but just three dogs ... what are the chances?

What I'm looking for is is this a HUGE concern or am I worrying too much?

Are we talking 10% chance? Or 1 in 1000? Anyone know?

An actual probability would be difficult to assess. However, I will say that it would be very unlikely that either of the adult dogs is afflicted with the disease. It is considered a puppy disease because this population of dogs is the one who does not have the antibodies already built up in their immune system to fight off the virus. An adult dog will likely have built up some natural antibodies along their way and more than likely has had a couple of sets of vaccines in his her lifetime also. Although gauging where or not they have had vaccines or not has more to do with where exactly you're house sitting and what the socioeconomic status is as well as the culture regarding animal vetting etc.

What I will say can be a concern is if you're house sitting somewhere where the population is not vaccinating their dogs much is the adult dogs tracking in particles on their feet that are contaminated. Again this very much depends on where it is you're house sitting.

What I would do in this case is wear old shoes you're willing to dispose of or at the very least bleach the bottoms. Those would be your biggest safety precautions.

I can't remember if you're planning on bring the pup or not but that I would not advise unless you find out the vaccine status on the dogs.

I would assume your puppy will have had at least 2 puppy boosters and so should have enough immunity to be at a private place where there will be other dogs. I start my puppies in puppy kindergarten at 10 weeks old as soon as I get them and take them all over the place(obviously no dog parks, dog beaches or pet stores). You need to socialize the pup and that is a very critical age to get that done.

Parvo could be stopped with proper treatment of all surfaces where your pet walks and lives. The typical way to kill the bug is to reach for the toxic chemicals, such as bleach. Chemicals, however, must remain on the surface (a problem with vertical surfaces) for several minutes, leave residues and fill the air with toxic fumes. In practice, they are simply not effective and are toxic to small animals, particularity puppies. The only effective treatment is steam vapor with Tancs. Tancs generated steam has been shown in the labratory to kill parvo in seconds not minutes yet leaves no residues and you or the pet don't have to breath toxic fumes. Thanks for your replies. I did end up calling and the dogs are all vaccinated. As I said, 2 of the dogs she was just pet sitting for and they won't be there. She described them on the phone as "Thousand dollar purebreds" and that they were vaccinated for SURE. The dog they have she did say was vaccinated. There are zero neighbors close by - it's a very secluded place.

I think I'll just go and take common sense precautions.

I think he gets his first vaccines not until 8 weeks, so he won't have his second set yet when we go (I think you wait 3 weeks between them? I'm not sure - haven't found that out yet). I have to bring him because it's way too early to leave him long unattended and my husband will be working that Saturday. It will be great for his socialization because he'll meet several new people smile
