|I got Charlie at eight months old. He was quite the handful. He was the puppy who had no previous training and had been kenneled most of the time, so he had energy abound, and would actually LOOK for trouble just to get a little attention. He also wasn't housebroken. The previous owner had told me "He's fully house-trained, he knows his basic commands, he's kennel trained, and he's six months old" I got all his vet records from ten weeks old and guess what? His birthdate was on there - he was eight months. He also happened to crouch and pee directly on my carpet in front of me, while watching for my reaction. He was kennel trained - but only because he was in it so much and he'd even pee in that! He'd had FOUR HOMES in just eight months time - I was number five! The only thing he knew at all was his name - nevermind all those basic commands.
I was disheartened at being lied to. I'll be honest there.
Charlie peed on things - beds, blankets, couches, etc - anything soft that he would lay on. But he quickly learned how to ask to go out. He would wrestle the kitchen garbage until all the garbage was all over my apartment. He would jump up onto the top of my kitchen table and stand there and just wait, with a slowly wagging tail and a smirk I'm sure, to get into trouble because even discipline was a form of attention. He'd de-stuff my favorite stuffed animals and he drove me up a wall most of the time.
But I had some good help on my side. I worked in a doggy daycare, so from 7:30am til 6:30 pm, he'd go to work with me and wear out all that dastardly energy playing all day. Then we'd come home, eat dinner, and head off to the dog park for a few hours too. It helped amazingly.
Today, I'm really proud of the dog he's become. I look at pictures and videos from him back then and look at him now and can see how he's filled out and grown up. I can't help but wonder why anyone would have ever given up such a fantastic little dog - let alone so many that had done just that.
