Recovering from being neutered...so sad

Got a new, young, furry love in your life? This is the place for you to ask all of your questions-big or small! Just remember that you are receiving advice from other dog owners and lovers... not professionals. If you have a major problem, always seek the advice of a vet or behaviorist! Most important is to remember to have fun with your new fur baby.

My female Golden was spayed at five and she was pretty much acting back to normal before we even picked her up from the vet. We came in to get her and the vet tech remarked on how energetic she was. Of course we kept her restricted for a couple days but honestly, most dogs don't need 10 days, especially a young dog.

Thanks everyone!!
I am finding it IMPOSSIBLE to keep him as calm as the vet dictated we should. He is a 5 month old puppy!!! I am so freaked out that he is going to pop a stitch, but part of me thinks - if he hasn't done it by now, he's not going to, but...
believe me, I have considered the benadryl option, but he is so little at 11 lbs, I wouldn't dare try to guess the dosage. He is feeling FINE which I guess is part of the problem. Not letting him run, jump or climb for TEN DAYS!!! Just not reality, though we are trying!snoopy

Good to hear he is doing well smile

Maybe try giving him some busy toys for the next week and a half? KONGs and puzzle balls? Hide some hot dogs on the floor so he has to find them?

Glad Tucker is feeling so much better. If he hasn't popped a stitch by now,he most likely won't and since it's been more than 3 days it's unlikely popping just one would do much harm. I understand the panic you are going through. About 12 years or so ago we had our Akita/GSD mix spayed and within hours, after recovering from anesthesia and a good nap,she decided to "play" with our neighbor in the next yard as he was coming home from an errand and I caught her jumping back and forth over a 2ft. wide, nearly 4ft. tall hedge, less than 12 hours after surgery and nearly had a heart attack. She was fine, and all stitches were intact. Wish I could say the same for my nerves.hugwishes

I lots of experience with this. I have had to care for over 10 female puppies that were spayed and one male that was neutered. Currently my Ellie, she's about 5, was spayed. She came home yesterday. Not only was she spayed but had to have 5 teeth pulled. She is mostly laying around on the couch but she does jump down from time to time or back up on the couch or chairs. My biggest issue with her is getting her meds in her as she isn't eating very well due to having the teeth pulled so I have to retrain her and give her the meds that way.

As far as your puppy, you cannot keep him still. Just do the best you can with keeping him from jumping around for the next 3-5 days. Spend alot of time with him on the floor so he isn't wanting to jump up to be with you. Give him chew toys to keep him calm and busy. It is very unnerving but he will be fine. Even if he runs around a bit he will be fine. The biggest issue is keeping him from bothering the stitches, licking them, pulling them out etc. Maybe if you offer him chew toys you can remove the collar and supervise him while he chews. A break here in there from the collar will make him feel better.

That's so sad..Did you get pain meds? I was snipped last month and came home sleepy but no cone, and Momma had a hard time keeping me still cuzz I wanted to play but when she started my pain meds I just slept. Had dissolving sutures so didn't have to go back either. Actually it wasn't bad at all.

Hope you're feeling better todayhughug

Turner - Gone Too- Soon

Hi I'm Turner- Wanna Smell My- Butt?

When I had my rescue we would have several pups done at once. After they went potty we would use mens/boys briefs. Turn them upside down and pull the tail through! laugh out loud Works like a charm. You have to keep them tethered, but at least weren't licking like crazy!
Good luck! way to go
