The local police just brought in a litter of TEN puppies found in a box beside a dumpster!!!
They appear to be about 4 - 5 weeks old, shepherdy mixes. All seem healthy enough except on is very, very tiny and skinny (but he ate fine)
Can you imagine dumping off a box of TEN babies in freezing weather????

Toto, no, I cannot imagine it. At the very least, dump them off next to AC or town shelter because then at least there's a chance someone will help them before they freeze to death or die of starvation...but just beside a dumpster in freezing weather? ugh.

Thank you for helping these poor little guys!

I don't understand that at all... if they were 4 weeks, they could be weaned and given away if they really had to get rid of them in a hurry (never mind how irresponsible that is, but at least they would be safer than in a dumpster.) And how could you keep a litter of puppies for a whole month and then suddenly decide to dump them?

Bruno...because Momma won't feed them anymore and they won't pay for puppy food!! No one around here wants a shepherd mix in the middle of the Winter so giving them away is also a problem.
And, out of fairness to the dumpers, there are two humane society shelters in the area and both charge $60/dog, IF they will even take them. They usually won't because they are too busy importing dogs and puppies from the South cuz it makes for better advertising and donations for them.
No pounds or AC places, either. They are all small towns and the strays usually go to either vet clinics or our boarding kennel, whichever one of us will take them and has any room.

I forget what a small town you're in sometimes... not a lot of options it sounds like. Around here, if you're not picky about where they go and don't charge a fee, even big mutt puppies go fast. We don't have "real" winter either, so housebreaking is not so onerous. I forget how bad it would be if there was a lot of snow on the ground...

I hope you can find people to take these poor babies, snow or not. frown

The good part about a boarding kennel/grooming salon is that we have people in and out all day long. Already have two GREAT homes lined up and they've only been here for about 3 hours so far!!

Glad someone found them in time. And selfishly glad they weren't on my doorstep this time, but at least they are safe now. Thanks Toto.

That's terrible frown

I once came across a single kitten, she had to be only two or three days old, in a box on the side of the road, and in the middle of winter. Poor thing. I have no clue how she made it, but she must have been made of some tuff stuff! She ended up being one of the best rescue cats I've had go through my home.

Around here, our shelter for a long time got so many people just tying their dogs up to fence posts or setting boxes of puppies and kittens at the door in the middle of the night, that they finally just built some unlocked kennels so people could at least put them in some shelter. I guess it is kinda nice so dogs and cats don't need to be left out in the cold all night...but still, it saddens me to know that we have just THAT many people who dump their dogs at the shelter in the middle of the night. I guess because they're too ashamed to drop them off in the morning...or they just don't want to deal with other people shrug
