If remembering to renew it is your only concern, there are ways around that... put a reminding in something you use once or twice a year. For example, paperclip a note to the folder you keep the puppy's medical records in and renew it when you get his annual checkup. Or to your income taxes (at least, we always refer to last years taxes when doing this years). Or put a note in on top of your most cherished Christmas ornament or to the page with your favorite Christmas recipe on it or to the box of birthday cake candles.

You can outline the note with a florescent highlighter maybe.

There'd be no way I could remember to pay a yearly renew on a chip.

I barely remember to give Tohbi his heartworm pills once a month!

Tohbi's not chipped. When he was a puppy (and maybe to this day), our county humane society didn't have a chip reader. No sense in chipping a dog when there's nobody around here to read it. I always figured I'd get around to it... but I FORGOT!

Des has HomeAgain and we love it. I don't mind paying the yearly fee. I get on her account often to see if there are any notifications/updates. Plus it sends me an email when there is a lost pet in my area. I make sure to read those since I would hope people would do the same if Des was lost. Anyways, I chose it because its the most popular one in our area. Most of the vets/shelters have readers for it. I wish they had a lifetime fee but unfortunately they don't.

There are plenty of "once a year" payments that I have so I just make a list and at the beginning of each calender year I mark when each are due on my new calender. I guess not everyone is as organized as me! (I get it from my mother)

But in answer to the question, I don't see why you couldn't do a second. I would contact HomeAgain to see if they can deactivate it - so it doesn't even register that there's a chip there. The reason being if the scanner only picked up the HomeAgain chip and no information came up then the person scanning would probably stop there.

I just had Willow microchipped with Home Again  in June.  I heard about the yearly payments and was going to do Avid instead, but then someone told me that the yearly payments are if you want all the extra perks.  There is just the one time fee for the microchip and if the dog is lost they will always give out your name and info, but nothing else.  When I went to get it done I talked with the person from Home Again and they told me that was true, but kept trying to push the yearly fees.  As long as the dog is microchiped with Home Again they will keep your microchip activated even if you don't pay more then just the first year.
