Yeah It's really not even about the money. I can afford $15 a year BUT... to be honest if I don't recognize my mail as regular bills or cards, etc. They are all trashed. We get a lot of junk mail and credit card offers!

I'm just afraid it will become a big pain in the butt. Like if I don't get the paper and don't renew it what'll happen? shrug

I also love having my pets chipped through the local shelter. Because that also insures if I cannot be contacted (vacation, etc) they will go to my local shelter I will know exactly where to pick them up! Because They are also registered to the county.

I have only lost one pet, years and years ago. My cat Smokey got lost I was living in an apartment complex. He constantly was pulling off his collar and I don't think they had microchips then?! thinking I got him back thanks to some "lost pet" signs.

But then again I hope my dogs never need to use their microchips I am very careful. But it's just like owning a gun, it's good to have one but you hope to god you never have to use it!

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I think I will call my local shelter and ask them what they think on Monday!

Personally I prefer HomeAgain, I haven't had any troubles with them and I can pay online. I have both of my WGSD signed up with them. I really don't mind the 14.95 fee for a year. And i have it set up to send me an e-mail when it gets to be time to renew.

I agree with Addy, IF Home Again has dropped the permanent registration it will be unfortunate since the average pet owner will not do the registration every year. Avid also offers an option where the breeder can pre-pay the registration for the pups they implant... that is a good idea to make sure it really gets done. I buy Avid because of the fact that they are registered to me when I buy them. That has worked for me twice in the approximately 15 years I have used them.

Roxy and Bam-Bam, honestly, I would try calling HomeAgain and asking. I suspect that they still have the one-time permanent registration available, for people pushy enough to call them and ask--but if they don't, at least you'll be two data points saying that people want it, and are (maybe?) unhappy enough to go to AVID if HomeAgain won't offer it.

Cost does not concern me, what concerns me most is what chip is commonly used in my area. It does me no good if no one can read the chip I have. We use HomeAgain and have been very happy with it. Feel free to call customer service if you have questions, they are very helpful and friendly.

Both times I tried to match a Home Again chip with an owner I called Home Again. Both times I was told that the chip had been sold to a veterinarian's office somewhere in New England. They told me they had no other information than that... they sold the chips to a distributor who in turn, sold them to vets in New England. The distributor had no idea who got what chips. I was sure thankful it wasn't my lost dog somewhere if that's the only information I could get. At least Avid keeps track of where each and every chip is sold... that narrows it down enough so you at least have a small chance of re-uniting an owner and a pet, at least if the breeder or vet or shelter kept good records when they used the chip.
None of this would have been a problem if the pet owners had only registered their chips when they got the pet!!!!!! I recently talked with an animal control officer in S. Massachusetts... she told me she dreads finding a chipped dog because so few of the chips are registered.... it is almost worse than no chip at all. You know the animal is owned by someone but have no way of finding out who that person is.

Yeah, BJ, I don't know what good people think their chip is if it's not registered. That reminds me, I need to make sure my m-i-l registered our older cats chips. I feel like the vets are a bit vague on explaining them though, they have lots of other things going on. If I hadn't already had other chipped pets I might not have known to go online and check Tanuk's chip in.

Boy, sounds as if I should have gotten Avid instead of Home Again! Ugh!frown

Live and learn, I suppose. thinking

I know my vet has a 'multiple' or 'universal' scanner -- but not all do, nor do all shelters! Fortunately in my area, a lost doggie generally ends up at one of the towns' dogcatchers' house(s). In one case, a lost goat ended up there!shock

That's exactly what I mean BJ what if I forget to renew the chip then it's worthless!

I didn't know the vet/shelter had to have the company's scanner? That's scary!

My Bridgette and bandit have homeagain with the lifetime registration! They got them when the shelter carried them about 3 years ago. My other dogs are registered through Avid because homeagain stopped doing the lifetime registration so they switched to Avid. Because it's important to the shelters to have the lifetime because most people will not renew the chips.
