PLEASE feed me,- I'm STARVING!!
|
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 10:21pm PST | | | | | | Ok guys I need some help! Here's the thing, My Roxy got Micro Chipped by the breeder. But they micro chipped her with home again! And I have to pay $10 activation and $15 a year for it. With all my other dogs (and cat) were microchipped through our local animal shelter.
At our animal shelter they Micro Chip for $15 and it's a lifetime registration.
So my question is can I just not register the current micro chip and get another one from our shelter?

Jenna
I know just- enough to cause- trouble. |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 10:42am PST | | | | | | my only concern would be, if the dog was lost, what if the shelter/vet/or whoever find her scan her, and when they find the chip from the breeder they stop? Maybe they can track her to the breeder and maybe she'd contact you. I suppose having both chips, yours and hers would at least give them the possibility of finding the right chip and contacting you, but I dunno. I know Jenna was chipped, but well. I no longer have the chip information I don't think and I never registered it. I'd rather not go to the vet that I dealt with at her spay either. So I'm still pondering what to do about her myself. | | | | |

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 2:20pm PST | | | | | | No the breeder just chipped her, I am supposed to register her. So the chip has no info on it.
So my concern is when they scan will they find two chips? Or a blank chip and a registered chip? Or will they only get the chip that was registered?

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 2:36pm PST | | | | | | All chips have the information already on them, they are not activated, only registered. I didn't know any of them charged a yearly fee... all the ones I've seen have a lifetime registration fee. As a breeder, when I chip with an Avid chip it is automatically registered to me, then individually registered to whomever gets the puppy and sends that info in along with the $18.50 lifetime fee. I use Avid because they were the only ones I found that did automatically register it to the purchaser of the chip so if the buyer of the pup fails to do the registration I will be contacted and can hopefully find the owner thru my own records. I would have the shelter scan the breeders chip and register that number for you instead of another chip. | | | | |

Got Squeakers? |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 2:43pm PST | | | | | | Zack has two chips as well. They chipped him when he was dropped off at the shelter, then accidentally got chipped again when he was neutered.
They are both the same kind of chip, so we just changed both individual chips from the shelters information to ours. Called the chip company just the same way you change information for any chip, but did it twice.

| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 5:35pm PST | | | | | | Both AVID and HomeAgain have two kinds of registration, a lifetime registration that just allows anyone finding your dog to find you, and you to use their website to get the word out and print Lost Pet posters, and another, annual registration service that lets any shelter or vet that finds your dog also have access to his medical records etc., which if your dog has any medical issues could be important.
And both companies do their best to give you the impression that annual registration is your only option, but that's not true. Contact them and be firm about it, if you only want the lifetime registration.

Lil' Rubble |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 7:22pm PST | | | | | | Jenny, thats strange... Bam-Bam's breeder did his Avid chip and she wasn't automatically registered to it. In fact, I put her on as a secondary contact because I knew if I couldn't be traced, she'd be the next best thing.
Addy... I'll have to research Home Again. The breeder switched to them for Reyna and I thought I only saw an option of an annual fee which was irritating. So if I don't pay that, they'd still be able to find me, if God forbid, Reyna got lost?

Let's go for a- walk! |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 7:49pm PST | | | | | | You do have to register, and it is a separate fee from just buying the chip.
Addy and my two cats are registered with the lifetime registration only with HomeAgain.
If HomeAgain has really stopped offering that to new customers at all, rather than just making it hard to find out about, I'll be deeply annoyed. (Not that they'll care!)
AVID keeps a record of who they sold the chips to--so even though your breeder is not listed as a contact, if you never registered the chip, they would still have the record of who bought, and presumably implanted, the chip. That has been used to follow up on pets that get picked up with unregistered chips.
OTOH, AVID encrypts their chips so that they can be detected, but not read, by other scanners. Both companies have their advantages and disadvantages.

Lil' Rubble |
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 7:57pm PST | | | | | | I just reread my homeagain paperwork... It says that by signing it I agree to pay the initial start up fee plus the annual $14.99 fee. There is no other option and it says they'll send me a bill to confirm my next annual payment. Darn. | | | | |
