Last Saturday I found a dog trying to kill itself on the main road, same one I was knocked down on 2 days before. I borrowed some rope to tie it up and took it round the park, but nobody owned it. After many phone calls I found a vet with a scanner and took it up and it had a chip!!
This dog was 15 miles away from home and it's feet were bleeding.
So we called the owners and after a few days got him home. If he hadn't been chipped we would have put up signs around the local area, maybe put an ad in the local paper and he never would have got home.
This is why I chipped toby today, and this is why you should chip your dog too. He is worth more that $20.
Sure obedience classes are important, but if you don't have a dog then it's wasted money. Chip first, everything else later.

BJ, we do registration numbers. Generally ADBA on the bulldogs, and a few have been ADBA& AADR. The registries vary more with the hounds.

Some of the dogs have had darker up to and including black skin (B&Ts). My friend that actually does the inking, keeps some white ink just for black dogs. We've discussed (amongst ourselves and with a well respected ink slinger) trying a couple of other colors on darker dogs (based on what shows up on a person of a similar shade). The big talking point has been pigment chemistry (staying away from the plastics). Having someone who knows the ins and outs of mixing their own colors and carriers is probably the number one reason my friend has never had a dog have a bad reaction.

I had a vet in Maryland do Scooter's ink and in retrospect, I should have had my friend do it, but I couldn't justify an 800 mile drive just for that and I wanted him sedated. I think the vet mainly does large farm animals; it goes all the way across his thigh from his groin to his knee. The little guy has hairy inner thighs, but it is still very visible.

Addy, that is why we have never bothered with the ears. As for a dog not wanting to roll over, there are times when it isn't up to them. We can do it the easy way or we can do it the hard way, but it will be done. As for hair growth, most dogs are thinner furred in that area anyway. I do know of several people with heavier coated dogs who just keep that area short or go with a freeze brand.

You're overlooking the fact that's it's not going to be you doing it; it's going to be unknown shelter workers, many of whom will not risk trying to turn over a fear-aggressive dog.

Dogs in shelters aren't going to be fresh-groomed from their owners's hands, usually. And do you anesthetize the dog before freeze branding, or apply a local anesthetic?

Have you ever had warts frozen off of you?

Bianca has a tattoo and a microchip. I wanted to do tattoos for my previous dogs just because it was visible unlike a chip, but I couldn't find anyone to do them. Bianca however came with the tattoo when I adopted her. Many GSD breeders including the one she originally came from routinely tattoo the dog (in the ear.) When I adopted her I had her microchipped right away and then I registered both the tattoo and the microchip.
way to go

Addy, no warts, but I'm well aware of how a freeze brand is applied and how much or little it can hurt. Let's just say I have an interest in branding and scarification. We've got a vet we use and recommend due to the increased aftercare and the fact he will do home visits. I do know of one kennel who does their dogs just like a cow (outer thigh).

You need to keep in mind that the APBTs that we've done are the kind of dogs that aren't going to be fear aggressive. These are the dogs that are too friendly for their own good.
