Gibson
Little Ball of- Fury! |
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 4:35pm PST | | | | | | the humane society that i'm getting gibson neutered at (for $55) also has the option to micro-chip him for $25. that's not bad at all. and then i think there is also a $17.50, one time registration fee. i heard that putting a micro-chip in isn't very evasive at all, so i wish i could do it the same time as neutering, it all just adds up.
i had a chance to get the whole package for $30 if i registered gibson with the ckc, and they would send you a chip... but i found that really odd cause i would have to go get it inserted anyway. plus i'm kind of fed up with the ckc so i didn't even register him. you can register him online, and it asks if your registration form is signed... i had a few problems with my breeder and it wasn't signed. so they said i couldn't register, but then i went back and said that it was signed and they were going to let me do it. knowing that i was like... forget it! gibson is going to be a pet and i'd rather not spend money on ckc registration when practically any dog can be registered. ha.

Luke--- the dog talking
|
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 4:41pm PST | | | | | | Okay... Avid phone 951-371-7505 or 800-336-AVID, or email Pettrac@AvidID.com or web page WWW.AvidID.com. You could probably register online or over the phone.... you need the number though. And, it's 18.50 for a lifetime registration. Hope this helps! | | | | |

Boo
If it breathes,- it's my friend |
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 8:56am PST | | | | | | I had Boo chipped at the vet when she was spayed. The fee for chipping was $15.00 and included a year of free pet insurance coverage in case of accident. The annual chip fee is $15.00; a cheap price to pay if you ever lose your pet.
Many shelters offer low spay/neuter fees/vaccinations as well as very low cost micro-chipping. I prefer to go with what the shelters offer because they are already using the same system to micro-chip hundreds, if not thousands of animals. If your pet gets lost, it's likely that they'll end up at one of the shelters. In any case, even if the chip can't be fully read, the shelter will know what systems the other shelters and vets are using.
Micro-chipping is well worth the small cost.

Look what Santa- brought Me! |
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 11:41am PST | | | | | | BJ, if you have inked dogs and it was unreadable within a year, that tells me that you (be way of your method or your supplies) are the problem. I've had dogs inked (young) and the tats were still very clear at their time of death (10-15 years later). I've never seen a dog have a reaction to ink and I've seen plenty of inked dogs (preferred method of ID for APBTs and hounds). I've also found that if the ink was done right in the first place, it is very obvious if someone else tries to change the numbers.
Dingo, labs check more than just the abdomen. They also check ears and thighs. We always ink the inner right thigh.
To the OP, the good news is that the chip registries won't just re-register the dog if someone calls. I've heard several stories where it has been attempted and the dog has been recovered for the owner.

Let's go for a- walk! |
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 12:56pm PST | | | | | | Scooter, tattooing the groin or inner thigh may work on short-haired breeds, but not so much on long-haired breeds. The hair grows, the tattoo is obscured. And then too, you're assuming the dog is going to be calm and perfectly easy about being burned over to look for the tattoo.
That's not necessarily going to be true with a scared, traumatized dog in a shelter environment. It's a lot easier to scan for a chp.
As for the ear--ears can be cut off.

We don't do- doodles!!
|
| Barked: Fri Jul 3, '09 1:04pm PST | | | | | | Scooter...The problem with the tattoo is that they were mostly labs... labs start out with pink skin and as they mature it turns black. Black ink does not show up on black skin, nor will alcohol make it show up as it can with some other faded tattoos. These lost tattoos were not just done by me... they were done by various agencies including my veterinarian and others who told me about the problems with black skin prior to applying the tattoos. I also tried green and red ink but again, it would not show up after a few months. None of the APBT's or huskys or dogs with nice pink skin ever faded.
And, what are you using for numbers???? We found a sheltie in a garbage bag with a cement block on the bottom of a pond when it was drained. It had a clearly legible social security number but NO ONE at any of three SS departments would give us the number NOR contact the owner. To this day I wonder whose dog it was and why it was drowned.
However, to be fair, we also scanned a good number of microchips only to find that the owner failed to register the number and we were unable to trace the chip to anyone. Soo, I guess you would call that user error as well.
