Little Ball of- Fury! |
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 9:37am PST | | | | | | i have a chance to micro-chip gibson when he gets neutered in a few months. but i'm not sure if i should do it or not. is it really worth the money (i know it doesn't cost that much, but it's just one more thing to pay for). i heard that some machines can't scan all the different brands of micro-chips. and when lost, it's up to whoever found the dog to go get it scanned. with all of that in mind i'm not sure i want to spend the money right now.
on another note, my boyfriend found a dog that resembled a lhasa apso last night that almost got hit by a car. he loves those little things so he got it and it had a collar but no tags... not even a hint of a tag... so he took it to the vet to get it scanned and there was no micro-chip. (they scanned the whole body). he finally decided to go to the nearby houses and ask who it belonged to and it was this little girl's dog. the dog was about 2 years old and it was in heat! she said she doesn't keep tags on it cause it's an inside dog... but even inside dogs go outside to potty! i'm just expressing my opinion here cause i'm kind of annoyed that a little girl has a dog that has no tags AND its not spayed. granted my dog wasn't going to be neutered until i realized the dangers but still, i guess it's easy for me to get annoyed. haha.

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 10:45am PST | | | | | | I think micro chips are well worth the money. It is too easy to lose a collar or the tags and once they are off, the micro chip is the only way to trace a lost dog. The other reason is dog theft.
Our vet saw people stealing his dog, and when he went to them, they lied saying it was their dog. The vet proved it was his by the microchip.
Another person got her dog back six months after it was stolen because animal control scanned it and found the tags didn't match the microchip registry.

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 10:50am PST | | | | | | Any major brand of microchip, most scanners will at a minimum detect the presence of the chip and its brand. Even if the vet or the shelter doesn't have the correct scanner, they'll know who in the area uses those chips and will have the right scanner.
Addy does not normally wear her collar and tags in the house, for safety reasons. (See numerous Dogster threads about collar disasters and near-disasters.) She always wears them when we go out, or when we have guests. That Lhasa you found, couldn't you have returned her more quickly if she had had a chip?

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 12:30pm PST | | | | | | yea, we could have returned her more quickly if there was a chip. but like i was saying, my boyfriend had the decency to take the dog to the vet. i wasn't sure if other people do that. and i wasn't sure about laws if there was suspicion that someone took your animal that you could make them take it to the vet and scan for micro-chips. i might just be paranoid, but i am scared that someone is going to take gibson and not get him scanned even if he did have a micro-chip. and i was just wondering the statistics of people who get caught with an animal that is not truly theirs. anyway, i think it's probably safer to get a micro-chip for him. but it's just going to have to wait for a little while. he has all of his vaccinations (which were expensive), and now it's time to gear up for neutering (which is some-what expensive even at low cost), and even then i still need to get him to obedience class which is way out their in expense. so his micro-chip has to wait. | | | | |

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 12:54pm PST | | | | | | If you are having the neuter done before the obedience classes, then get the chip then.
Nothing y0u can do will help if someone takes your dog and takes it far enough away that neither you nor anyone you know ever sees it again. But if the dog is lost and taken to a shelter, or found by someone who would like to find the owner and taken to a vet to have it scanned for a chip, they'll be able to find you.
Or if the dog is lost or stolen, and winds up in the hands someone who decides to keep it, and you find out, you CAN insist that the dog be scanned, and prove your ownership.
Nothing gives you 100% protection against everything that could go wrong, but a microchip dramatically improves your odds of getting your missing dog back.

The only limit- is the end of- the trail |
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 1:12pm PST | | | | | | I'm in the monority with chips, knowing that they have a tendency to cause cancerous tumors and like to move I prefer tatoos, they dont move, dont have any severe side effects, wont kill the dog and are easy to find. a laborotory wont check your dog for a chip, they will however be handling the dog and should they look on the abdomen the tatoo will be obvious, theives who steal dogs to sell to labs wont sell a dog with a tatoo on the abdomen, if on the ear the ear is usually removed.
also just because you have a chip implanted doesn't mean anyone is obligated to find it. this also means if the scanner can't read the number they dont have to find a scanner that can.

We don't do- doodles!!
|
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 1:38pm PST | | | | | | Tattoos are by far less effective than chips... first of all is trying to determine what the number is. I have tattooed probably more than 500 dogs at various clinics in years past and I would venture to guess that 75% of them are unreadable within less than one year of the tattoo being put on due to fading, increase in pigmentation in the dog's skin, a puppy growing and having the number stretch or just by being hidden behind lots of coat . Another issue with a tattoo is that the dog has to be flipped over to read it... it is much safer to scan a dog who is standing up and being held with a leash. And, finally is the choice of numbers to identify the dog with... social security numbers would seem logical however the social security department WILL NOT release a persons name and/or address to someone who is trying to match up a number. Some of the nicer employee's may contact the person and give them your number, but that doesn't always happen... I know this is true because I have tried more than once to track down an owner for a tattooed dog when I was managing a shelter. A phone number doesn't work because people change their numbers often and/or move to a different area code. Also, there have been several documented cases of tumors resulting from reactions to the tattoo ink.
Yes, rarely a chip will fail or the new owner will not register the chip, however I still chip my dogs rather than tattooing them.

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 3:01pm PST | | | | | | yea i think micro-chipping is worth it. the benefits seem to outweigh everything else. i'm just going to have to wait to get it done. hopefully he won't get lost during that time and if so, hopefully at least ONE of his tags is still on. there is one with my number, another with an i.d. number from getmehome.com and when gibson got his rabies shot they put on a tag with the vet's name and number. they have all my contact information so we'll see if that gets him back. thanks for all the input | | | | |

| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 3:41pm PST | | | | | | I'm in the monority with chips, knowing that they have a tendency to cause cancerous tumors
Microchips have a tendency to cause cancer in the white rats that are bred specifically for their strong susceptibility to develop cancer, so that scientists can test treatments.
Out of the millions of dogs who have been microchipped, there have been two identified tumors near (not encapsulating) microchips. The kicker is, it's the same spot that vaccines are commonly injected--and injection site sarcoma is a known and well-documented phenomenon.
There is exactly zero reason to believe that microchips cause cancer in dogs or cats. But for sure, don't microchip your pet white rat!

Why run when you- can hop??!!
|
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 4:10pm PST | | | | | | I think microchipping is great! I do have to say, my boys are not chipped but I am hopping to maybe get them this winter. But at the shelter I volunteer at they chip all the cats & dogs that get adopted. Almost all vet offices scan, shelters, and animal control offices check for micro-chips. The shelter I volunteer at doesn't take in strays but everyonce in a while people will call with a dog they found and we tell them to bring it down any way so we can scan it.
Also if you are a bit worried about cost, you can maybe check out some local shelters or a humane society because they might do low cost chipping and plus the money goes to homeless animals.
