I don't think I've ever heard of measuring water. thinking I say keep it full all the time!! I think it's better to be over hydrated than under hydrated.

My dog shamus, suffered a bout of dehydration when he swallowed something and trust me you don't want your dog to get dehyrdated...its so awful for them. Shamus is really thirsty some days and other days he barely drinks anything. We just leave a lil bit of water in his bowl at all times and if we notice it empty we put more. I dunno about setting a time when you stop giving them water so they don't pee alot. Luckily me and my boyfriend don't go to bed until really late so we just take him out.

My puppy has a smallish water dish that is ALWAYS filled up when she drinks even half of it. She does drink a considerable amount as she is a puppy and plays a lot, but we never discourage her drinking. She even gets one last shot before going in her crate at night. If I have to get up one extra time, that is fine with me because dehydration would be a terrible thing to risk with my pup.

Any dog should have access to water 24/7. You can't worry about them peeing. Once they are old enough if taken out at bedtime, they can hold it till morning. I never heard of anyone rationing a dog's water? Ask your vet, they should have it all day and night.

When I was being potty trained, water was picked up 1 or 2 hours before bed. It only took me two months or so to figure out the potty thing.

Now, water is down all the time. Bowl cleaned and water change daily.

My boys have a big bowl of water down 24/7. Winslow used to play in it, but I just picked it up for 20 minutes every time he tried to play in it, and he stopped pretty quickly. I sometimes pick it up an hour or so before bed, especially if I plan on sleeping in, but 90% of the time they have a full bowl of water.

I don't think it's healthy to ration water the way you would food. To my knowledge, it's pretty rare for a dog to drink too much and get sick in they way that they might with food. If your dog has that tendency then I suppose rationing water would be your safest bet, but I don't think that's really appropriate for a pup.

Once again, I've done it with 6 pups so far and SURPRISE! not one has ever been dehydrated. And I work my dogs harder than almost every other dog owner I know. I know most of the people in my puppy training class did this too. And if my dogs vet is recommending it to me I'm sure he's recommended it to countless others.

Just because some of you have never used this technique or heard of it doesn't make it wrong or bad so stepping off the high horses would be nice. Ignorance to something doesn't make you right. If you'd want to consult your vet or do some research on the technique and then give an opinion on it feel free by all means. But simply saying I've never heard of that you're wrong, is wrong. Period.

I also wanted to add I'm a stay at home mom that rarely leaves home for more than a few hours at a time. My dogs have access to the outdoors to potty whenever they please and my pup goes out once an hour on the hour - AND for now twice during the night thank you very much. Using the technique of watering a pup only at designated times throughout the day has NOTHING to do with me NOT wanting to let my pup outside potty. It's not because I'm lazy or don't care or because I don't want to clean up pees in my house. It has to do with the PHYSICAL REACTION a dog's body has when it drinks water (the exact same reaction it has when it eats). To leave water out all day would be the same as leaving out food all day. That's not my opinion, that's SCIENCE.

And if someone would PLEASE direct me to where anyone here has said they would only give their pup a certain amount of water a day a no more I'd love to see it so please. I'm not sure why people keep bringing that up as if it's been implied thinking

With that I am out of this thread. Hopefully someone will learn something from this thread, all I've managed to pick up is some people prefer to leave their blinders on instead of opening their eyes to something they weren't aware of before.....

Hope everyone has a great day wave

I'll post my final response...... then I'll be done with this thread also since it's turned into more than it should of been.

People are going to do what they feel is right for their dog..... limiting water or the times water is down for a dog - some don't agree with.

I don't think that comparing free water to free food is right or the same.... I don't think the criticizing is gonna solve anything. Some people are dead set in their ways that they are right on the subject and that's that. (I sometimes am one of those people!)

So as far as this..... nothing will be solved.

Bottom line is we all love our dogs and will do what we feel is best for them. None of us would intenationally hurt our dogs, that's for sure, so best to agree to disagree!

As for the original poster who left the water down only to find the dog played in it..... give it time. I'd say follow the advice to put the water up when the pup starts playing in it. Then give it back shortly after. The playing will get less & less... the peeing will get less & less frequent too! It'll take time but it'll get better! Just hang in there!

That's my last post in this thread..... agree to disagree on this subject!

Hope everyone has a great day too!

Hi all... interesting thread. I'm pretty new to dogster but I'm not new to animals and dogs- I have a degree in Animal Science. Yup, I've spent four years of college learning about animals and animal management...

I give my dogs access to clean water ALL DAY except for two hours or so before bed if in potty training mode (which I currently am with one pup). Animals should have access to water at all times.

And I dont know anyone (vet or scientist) who is going to agree with the statement "food is the same as water"
For starters, water is the number one essential nutrient that your dog needs. An animal, even human, can go much much longer without food than they can water.

A dog being free fed has a high probability of eating way way too much (I know my Dachshund would!) But that doesn't mean that if they are allowed free access to water that they are going to drink to much (as my Dachshund doesn't). Dogs will drink as their body calls for it... but that doesn't mean they will only eat as their body calls for it.

Your body, and an animal's body, does not respond the same way to water as it does for food. To begin with- drinking doesn't kick your digestive tract into gear as eating does (from the enzymes that are produced when you chew and salivate, along with solids entering your stomach that need to be broken down... water doesn't have that same effect).

So, I'd say allow your dog free access to water. Its not true that its the same as food. In my four years of school I've never ever heard that once... and probably would have been laughed at if I proposed the thought. Not to mention, I went to the college that has the highest acceptance rate in the country for students getting into vet school.
