Remember water comprises most of a dogs body (like people). So if it's a puppy, you want them to have all the water to grow like they should and hydrate their brain so they will be smart and learn potty training and tricks, their eyes so they can see well and their organs so they can function without sickness. My dogs are the same breed and size but their water intake varies widely so one should not limit their water. Learning, walking, being in the sun, sleeping and even breathing all take their toll on a bodies' water use.

also if you are feeding a dried dog food he will NEED lots of water - access to clean fresh water is a basic requirement in my opinion !

I'm not a moron, nor am I being cruel to my dogs. Frankly I don't care for anyone that took it upon themselves to try and "educate" me. I didn't ask for your opinions and I think it was terribly rude for those that interjected them.

I have four dogs currently, raised them all from pups and used the same technique on everyone (a lab, springer, pug and min pin). I've owned several other dogs before them and on the ADVICE OF A TRAINER and having my VETERINARIAN'S ok I've offered small pups water after exercise, training and with meals only until they are housebroken.

My dogs have NEVER been dehydrated. None have even ever fallen ill with the exception of Greta, Fynnly's sister who died of pneumonia the day after we brought her home. Almost $800 into the efforts to save her but I'm cruel right??? I've volunteered thousands of hours over the years at our local humane society. I know what cruel is better than anyone else.

I care deeply about my pets and am SERIOUSLY OFFENDED that ANYONE here would suggest I'm being cruel in any way. YOU talk to my trainers, YOU talk to my vet, YOU meet my dogs, then and only then can YOU judge ME.

With that I am out of this. My apologies to the OP for everyone that decided to jack your thread on my behalf.

Calm down. No one was trying to be rude. You gave your opinion on what you do, and others gave their opinion on what they do. Some disagree with you, as you disagree with others. That's all.

So if I were to say you were a committing an act of cruelty against your dog you wouldn't be offended by that???

This method is used by many pup and adult dog owners to assist in house training. Google it. It's not cruel or unusual.

For all that use crates to aid in house training because they're gone at work 4-8 hours a day or more it's not recommended water is ever placed in a crate with a pup so what does everyone do then??? It's the exact same premise.

Fynnly, what is the reasoning behind limiting water? I see no benefit other than for your own needs. Please educate me.

ETA: Do you drink the same amount of water every day at the same time? I don't. Some days I'm a camel, some days not at all thirsty. Do you vary the amts that you give?

I'm not really sure if anyone has said that you are a moron or cruel. If someone has, then I certainly agree that there are other more productive ways of communicating. I just think they disagree. I honestly have never heard of limiting or rationing water. I've never even thought of it, or ever had it recc. shrug I also don't crate so I can't comment on that either.
