I think it was a great question Olive, I was wondering about it too! (Zeke always has a bowl full, but I'm new to the rules for puppies!)

Can I ask a quick question on here? I just wanted to know if it was safe to have one of those bowls that clip or fit into the side of a crate, for when I'm gone and the puppy is home alone(crate training). I'm afraid of drowning......or of the puppy bumping it, getting its kennel soaked, then being left to shiver untill I get home!

I am wondering if part of the water measurement recommendation comes from a concern for bloat. You are a dog with a shape that is more likely to experience bloat. The total amount per day would then not be the concern but the amount at any one time and a few other possible factors. I would contact other Chessie owners as to what is appropriate for your breed's body shape and needs.

I am a breed that loooves water (for drinking and playing). But I do have a chest shape that may put me at an increased risk for bloat. Because of the remote possibility, we do everything we can to reduce the risks. One thing we do is limit my water intake. NOT the total amount but the rate at which I drink, when I drink, and how much I drink at any one time.

Other Chessie owners can provide recommendations for you, if necessary. Join the local club or an online message board of Chesie enthusiasts for all kinds of wonderful tips.

We give our pups water only when we feed them (which is 3-4 times a day) until they're completely house trained or unless we're spending a lot of time outside and it's hot (then I fill a kiddie pool up for everyone to share). I can't imagine working on house training with water available to a pup 24/7!

Here's more info on appropriate water in ounces to dog weight ratios and how a particular dog's circumstances/environment can come into play:

We've never had an issue with having water available 24/7 and potty training.

edit- Aina, we have a Dane and do the same thing as far as monitoring how much, and how quickly she drinks. She still has water available all day.

Hi Olive,
wave

My mom leaves water out all day for me but will pick it up at 7 pm. I don't usually get thirsty after that. It is okay to do that for potty training purposes. Just as long as she gets enough all day.

Fynnly,

Thanks for the link - it was very helpful. From what that link says - it looks like I'm giving her enough water. However, I'm sick of her padding around the kitchen always wanting stuff. So maybe if i leave a H2O bowl out - and we will see how things go.

Thanks again everyone!

Gavin gets water with meals, twice through the day, and then only ice cubes at night. Reccomended by the breeder and by a book I read also.
Untill he is a bit more housebroken, as it is he's peeing all the time! *laughs*

I'm perplexed why anyone would voluntarily limit the amount of water their dog gets. I understand taking it away if the pup is playing in it or if the pup is drinking too fast after play (bloat concerns), but as a practice to limit is bizarre to me.

Every dog's water needs are different. Two 65lb standard poodles will have two different water needs. To risk dehydration because you don't want to walk the dog more seems....selfish.

If your pup is actively hunting for any liquid it can find, it is most likely dehydrated. Please consider your dog's needs, not your own, when making a decision to limit water.

Ann and Quigley, I'm with you. I had never heard of rationing out water, not even for potty training.
