One thing that concerns me is that many breeders breed based ONLY looks and performance. To me, intelligence would be a key factor in whether or not a dog should be bred. It could be a wonderful show dog, a wonderful performance dog, have a great temperament and personality, it could match the standard almost perfectly...but if it isn't at least average intelligence for it's breed, then I would NOT breed it. I would have it spayed/neutered and sold to a show home...or keep it, if I had developed a bond with it.
I know that many permances require intellect. But, to me, intelligence is one of the most inportant traits in a dog. Not that I wouldn't love a stupid dog. To me, all dogs are loveable. A stupid dog isn't a good candidate for breeding though.

"Stupid" dogs are not capable of being sucessful in performance events. Even in obedience, you need a dog that is very motivated to please, intelligent, and can readily focus on different tasks. Other events that fall into the "performance" category include tracking, agilty, flyball, and herding. A dog has to have working instincts in order to compete sucessfully in those events.

I always have a good deal of respect for breeders that promote their stock in both conformation and performance. Regardless, I think it is rediculous that people believe and/or refuse to support breeders who participate in conformation because they feel that they are "destroying" a breed. I've seen an entirely 100% conformation bred Border Collie puppy go out and show more natural instinct that the three working bred pups that were there - so much for the "Barbie Collie" theory that was being tossed around!
