Hi! On Saturday my husband and I adopted a 1 year old Pom from a local rescue. I am SO in love! We were looking to adopt but never considered poms, but we couldn't resist this little guy. At 12.9lbs he is quite large so I assume he is some kind of mix, but seems to have many pom personality traits. His hair is quite long but doesn't have the "poof" factor. His red fur makes him look like a little fox!

Whoever owned him before must have been very good with him. He is in great shape physically, and his behavior is amazing. No begging, excessive barking, potty accidents, etc. We do need to work on behavior towards other dogs (especially smaller ones) and not pulling on the leash. He is VERY smart - way smarter than I give him credit for! I am so proud to be a dog mama and seeing his big floofy tail wag when I grab his leash melts my heart every day!

Haha, I love Poms =) They are very smart, and even the "dumb" ones are so persistent, they'll do absolutely anything to make you happy. Of course, you can inadvertently teach them very bad things that way...

He may be a big Pom, but he may also be pure. The problem with Poms is that they only started to be shrunken about a century ago, and the family of dogs the Pom is from includes some very large individuals. Some Poms still have very large genes hanging out in their jeans. An AKC standard Pom is a max of 8 pounds, but that doesn't make a bigger Pom a not-Pom. Just a Pom who doesn't meet standard.

Regardless, he looks adorable =)

Your Pom is cute. I believe you have a pure bred Pom, he just is on the large side. So many Poms go over breed standard regardless your Pom is handsome. He looks like a Pure Pom to me. Poms are amazing and smart, my Pom is yappy he barks a lot, so you should be grateful that you don't have a barker lol. Good Luck!

He looks pom to me.way to go Not all poms have that huge show coat and there are lots of poms out there over breed standard.
Make sure you are using a harness not a collar when walking him. Collars can badly damage their trachea.

Thanks everyone! Every day we are finding out new things about Cowboy's personality and we are working hard to get our schedule right. He is extremely energetic and is hyper when we get home from work. My husband tries to run with him but he is so distracted by whatever he smells outside. We're trying to praise him and give goodies when he walks calmly alongside us, but his nose gets the better of him it seems. Our morning walks are a little more productive since he is still sleepy and isn't as "sniffy". We go out for 45 minutes at 6am and I know he could go a lot more than that.

One good and bad thing Cowboy is that he isn't a chewer, scratcher, digger, etc. At least not yet. Our shoes and other belongings are easily accessible to him; he will sniff then but has never tried to lick, chew, eat, or do anything to any of our stuff. The downside of this is that he won't play with toys! He will sniff at them but walk away. We've tried to get him excited about the toys and we were only successful one time - he actually played fetch with me for a few seconds but then he promptly vomited. The only thing he will voluntarily play with is the classic Kong, which of course is filled with food (his favorite). I try to shower him with praise when he picks up the tug toy but he lets go of it as soon as I reach for him. I plan on getting a clicker this weekend. I am thinking about getting a Wobbler to stimulate and feed him in the evening when we are trying to eat and do chores. Do some dogs just not play with toys?

We found out last night that our quiet little Cowboy BARKS LIKE MAD when my husband and I are affectionate in front of him. kissing We did NOT see this coming! My husband and I have hugged, held hands, touched, etc in front of him all week and he's been fine. I guess more prolonged affection between us set him off. Just another thing to work on. dog walk

Maybe he just needs some more time to adjust to his new environment? Possibly after the novelty of all the new smells wears off he'll be more focused on walking/running! With my two, Oogie is a sniffer and Kip is a runner- and this difference becomes ESPECIALLY pronounced if I take them somewhere new to walk, because Oogie wants to sniff ALL THE THINGS! On trails we go to regularly she isn't quite so sniff crazy though smile

And that is lucky that you don't have a chewer on your hands! I lucked out with that myself... except for hair clips. Both of my dogs LOVE to chew hair clips for some reason. I can't even leave them on the bedside table or coffee table anymore, because Kip will undoubtedly try to eat them shrug

That is sad that he won't play with toys though frown My bestie "rescued" a 4 year old chihuahua from her older sister (I say rescue because the dog was pretty much ignored), and when she first got her the poor thing didn't know how to play because she'd never been played with before. She eventually learned in interacting with other dogs though, and Andrea likes to take her to the pet store with her so she can pick out her own toys now! Maybe you could take Cowboy to a pet store, show him different toys, and see if he shows any interest in any of them?

As for the affection thing, some dogs just get crazy jealous when they aren't the center of attention/affection! I've known several- and Kip is one of those dogs. He is mad jealous and even gets upset if my boyfriend and I CUDDLE without him! He will literally wedge himself between us, and if one of us tries to move him he will scurry back into that same wedged spot between us. He also gets VERY upset if you pay attention to any other dog than him big laugh My parent's Brittany, Freckle, is also that way. If she's in the chair with my dad, and my mom goes to give him a kiss, she starts this yodel-wailing-and-flailing nonsense and literally tries to cover my dad's head with her whole body so that my mom can't kiss him! Silly, silly dogs laugh out loud

Oh, so cute!

I have 2 rescue Poms and neither one is interested in toys. It's taken some time but I've found a few that they like and will occasionally chew on but I'm pretty sure fetching is not in either of their futures. cry Mandy's just lazy and Lola is still shy about things getting tossed around.

And yeah, I have a sniffer & a runner. Makes walks more difficult but amusing.

welcome

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought I wrote your posts!! BOL! Cowboy sounds exactly like Nicky!! smile Nicky is not motivated by toys at ALL which makes trying to teach retrieve a quite difficult task! He will not put his mouth on them! Nicky's training greatly excelled with the clicker so I would suggest looking into clicker training if you haven't already. I can often teach Nicky simple parlor tricks during commercial breaks. His leash manners including eye contact and heel has greatly improved with the clicker as well.

Originally being a large bred lover, I never thought my first dog would be a Pom either but I am SO glad I saw the light! I don't think I can picture my life without a Pom! Nicky's 14 pounds and purebred, but I always get asked if he's a Sheltie mix. Poms used to be 30 pound sled dogs so there is a wide variation in their weight. I know of someone who has a 20 pounder!

hehe if Im holding Bentley and my boyfriend and I kiss he likes to stick his nose in between us and give us kisses laugh out loud Bentley doesnt have an overly fluffy coat either, hes still a puppy though so he hasnt gotten his full coat but I dont think hes ever going to have a long fluffy coat. Like someone mentioned early there are all different types of poms not all of them have show coats! Either way cowboy is adorable! big grin
