Bentley has a set schedule of when he eats, three times a day about 1/8 of a cup each time. The vet advised us of having bentley on a schedule she said that poms have a tendency to over eat and become over weight and having them on a schedule is better. So that why we have him on a schedule and only feed him hard food. But thats us smile

I feed my dogs free-feed. Because it is less work. Also so my dogs won't starve.

I feed my dogs specific amounts on a set schedule so I can keep an eye on their weight.

My dogs are fed a certain amount of food once a day. Sometimes it's gone immediately and sometimes they snack all day.

I always believe it depends on the dog. In the past I have had dogs who don't over eat, so I would free feed them. I would serve the total daily amount of what they should have and by around 11pm the bowl was empty.

with Sparky though, I can't do that. He's the type that will eat his bowl in seconds, I tried to free feed him and the bowl was empty in two hours, then at night he was hungry.

So I feed him in a schedule. One cup a day, 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night.

Personally, I feed mine on a schedule. They get fed 1/2 of their portion in the morning and the other 1/2 at night. They also have a training session and get healthy treat snacks in the middle of the day.

For me, it's easier to feed them on a schedule because I can make sure one is not eating the other's food- something that would be difficult if I just left bowls of food down for them. If that happened, one could be overfed and the other would be under fed, so the schedule helps me to monitor their intake individually much more easily.

Sparky brings up a good point on which method is better. It really depends on the dog! If you have a dog that gobbles down an entire day's portion in two seconds flat, they probably aren't the best candidates for free feeding. If you have a self-regulating eater, there shouldn't a problem with free feeding. If you have multiple dogs, I would advocate for scheduled feeding for the reason I mentioned previously smile

I tried to do a set feeding but found it a bit difficult. I was scared he wasn't eating enough, so I started free feeding. He doesnt seem to eat a lot, I watch when he eats. If he started eating more I might change it up again, but at the moment, with as much as he eats with how much he plays, I think he's in a healthy situation.

I do scheduled feedings because if I free feed, Nick wouldn't get anything to eat.

I do not free feed, I feed my Pom at set times. For the first few months I devided up his daily allowance (he's on dry food) into 4 portions and he would have each portion at a certain time eady day. I then gradually cut it down to 3 and I am now deviding his food into 2 to see how he goes with that.

My cats have food down all the time but I wouldn't be able to do that with Prince because he would just eat and eat and eat if he had his way and would end up overweight. That's the only reason I do not free feed with Prince.

I had a female Pom before and she was exactly the same.
