The only place I've ever "trimmed" Nappy (and very little for that matter) is in the back so he doesn't get dingleberries. I'm willing to sacrifice a little back hair for a cleaner-looking Pom.

^^ Yep, I trim Bella's backside..
She has a fancy breezy do back there so she doesn't get poo constantly stuck to her fur.. which she still does a bit, but not super bad.

And it's ridiculous to suggest they have the wrong dog. Because of the double coats, there may be risks with cutting a pom, but it's the owner's call. Pom coats aren't sacred. It's just fur.

It is not really ridiculous to suggest that. People that buy dogs with a lot of hair need to be aware of the upkeep that comes along with them. It is a responsiblity and if they can't seem to handle that, they need another dog.

Also, there are risks to cutting a poms coat and the owner decides to totally disregard that?!? That is mind blowing! It is a person's responsibility to research a breed (and well might I add) before adding them to their family.

It's not just fur, it is a protective coat, just as Bodhi & Bella said, it does serve a purpose. If you don't like the way a pom looks with it's standard coat....why shave it? Why not just get a chihuahua?

Mochi asked for assistance, wasn't answered quickly enough and did what she wanted anyways. Looking at her profile I'm not sure why she was cut in the first place, being as young as she is.

Not bullying, I know people come for advice so we don't want to scare them away. A lot of owners on here know what we are talking about so, so sometimes just waiting for a good answer is best :]

She probably was not expecting the puppy uglies as much as I did for Nappy. The most recent pics I have of him are posted. He used to be really dark in the beginning and now he's an orangish-brown scruffball. I know cutting him would not be good, however. I've just been keeping up with the brushing and he seems to look ok.

I've heard that your not supposed to do anything drastic to their coats too. I atook my dogs for a sanitary cut and the woman shaved their hind legs. I was furious I told her in the beginning I liked them natural looking. Now I'm worried how well it will grow back. Seems kind of nappy now.

Mom shaves me normally twice a year. My hair has always grown back pretty fast and just fine. We go camping a lot and I love to go hiking and swimming and most importantly rolling in the mud and all of the other things to roll in when your on a hike. Mom has found it much easier to shave me down before a long camping trip so that not only do things get stuck in my coat but, most importantly for ticks. Lyme disease is awful here in Tennessee and Mom always gets worried even though we use advantix and cedar oil it just always doesn't cut it! She didn't shave me once and by the time we got back to the camp site I had 8 ticks already attached! I'm telling ya-they are awful here! Not to mention all the little 'burs (not sure what they are actually called-they are sticky little round balls and green sticky things) stuck all over my long beautiful coat!

Mom loves poms for their personality not their looks. Don't get me wrong-they are awfully cute, but she wouldn't trade me in for a chihuahua for anything in the world!

my mom is a dog groomer and was a vet tech for 8 years before that and there are health and problems that can come up from cutting any double coated dog

the guard coat will not grow back normaly sometimes it takes a few times for the damage to show up the under coat will get twice as thick or not grow longer then 1/8th an inch (mostly this happens when the pom is shaved with a blade if the groomer uses a snap on 2 comb or longer damage usually doesn't happen)

if your pom as traits of black skin disease in its genes they may lose all of the fur except the head and front legs and feet of the back legs and the skin turns black and gets rough and think and only 4 of 10 poms can recover from this and if they do it can happen again at anytime (like my brother rusty when mommy brought him home he was in full swing 3 years with black skin by his butt and his tail have not still recovered and may not)

as far as puppy fur i wouldnt cut or trim until the adult coat comes in this can damage the follicles also and kinda confuse the coat and it grow weird or not as full as it would have

it is up to the owner my mom talks to the people who come in with poms and shows and tells them the risks but it is still up to them and she doesnt look bad on them if they decide to go ahead and cut them but almost every time they have they have come back later and talked to her about how it isnt growing back the same or at all
