Black and Tan labs aren't mismarked though. It's a very very old coat color that was bred out...for the most part...because it was not in favor.

The public's perception on color being equal to behavior is an interesting aspect, though.

My wife's Guide is a female Black Lab, about 56 lbs. and the most gentle dog one could ever ask for. The Guide pup we are raising is a male Yellow Lab, about the same size as the active Guide. When we are out and about, I have noticed that folks will avoid being near the Black, but appear to be attracted to the Yellow. People will always address me (with the Yellow) first, and then kind of "add on" comments about the Black. When walking towards us, folks will move to the side that I am on (perhaps to give my wife a clearer path, out of courtesy, but perhaps because the Yellow looks less "threatening" than the Black? I dunno) and comment as we go by.
Her first Guide was a big 75 lb. Yellow Lab female, and she was always getting comments about her and having folks want to visit all the time. Not so with her Black.
I do have to admit that because of her Guides very dark brown eyes, it is a bit hard to "read" her, whereas the pup has very dark brown eyes against the light color fur that appear to be "easier" to read.

I adopted my lab from a shelter specifically because she was a black lab and I'd read that black dogs are considered less adoptable because they appear more aggressive.

However, I found it funny that you asked about specifying the color. Once when we took her to the mall, someone stopped me and asked what kind of dog she is, I said "lab". She's actually a lab mix but for the most part looks all lab, even the vet is sort of stumped as to what she's mixed with. Anyway, she's all black. She has a bit of yellow on the bottom of her paws but obviously this person can't see that, the woman looked at me and said "is she a black lab?"

It took all my restraint to not say, "nope. She's a yellow lab, can't you tell?"
