Does this mystify/annoy anyone else...? Or have you ever thought about it?

I just think it was because the traditional dog was a black labrador retriever, then the yellow labs were developed, then the chocolate labs. I think its just a habit since the colors were developed at different times. Well, I think the black lab came first (by what I read), then the yellow, then chocolate.
I have a black lab

Y'know... I've never really thought about it before but its true. Kinda intresting but perhaps its to do with the fact Labs are so popular? They only come in 3 colours; I guess people just consider each colour a different breed now.

Well that or we get the "I have a black lab" outta the way at first cause you KNOW they'll only ask otherwise laugh out loud

I never thought about it. I know something though, a guide dog school my grandmother go's to 'she's blind' and were I got Harpo. They are getting Chocolate labs out of training because something about them being less smart or less likely to make it past a training program.
It never occurred to me, I do say my yellow lab Harpo sometimes but I never think of labs as being different judging color.

I personally don't agree with color affecting the dogs intelligence, however, there is public perception (although many people don't realize it) that a black dog is more mean/apt to bite etc. It has been proven by people I've talked to that a lighter colored guide is more likely to have people trying to pet than a black one. I have noticed the same among several types of service dogs. Odin and his mis markings have actually had people scream.

Why would someone scream over Odin? He is so cute! Yeah, I noticed people are less willing to pet black dogs then light colored dogs.

People have thought he was a rottie and even a GSD (which I don't see at all) wit his markings. Apparently a dog wagging his tail at you means he wants to eat you. wink

I don't understand why people think Rotties are scary. Anyway, I don't see GSD in him at all.

I dont find rotties scary...I just have a fear because Ive been attacked by a rottie three times before :/ Im trying to get over my fear by adopting a rottie or rottie mix from the humane society. Right now Im looking for an agility dog though, Bubby just aint that fast lol. He's more of a dock-dog.
Im not replacing Bubby because hes not fast at agility, we are just looking for another dog and I want an agility buddy. I didnt mean for it to sound like I was only getting a dog for agility 0-0

You hit it right on the head. I have a chocolate lab, I did have a black one before Dexter. I feel uncomfortable by describing him as a chocolate lab when telling people what breed he it. I usually just say I have a labrador retriever. I find it is people with brown labs that mention their color. I never once described my first lab as a black lab. Oh well, I guess in the scheme of things it is not that important, I love them all!

bol i think you look cute Odin. I find mismarked Labs interesting.

I do say 'I have two black Labs', because, like alot of you already said, they ask anyway!bol So i've just gotten into the habit of saying it.
