The fact that Labrador Retrievers' colors have become part of their titles? "I have a chocolate Lab." "I have a yellow Lab."

I've never heard anyone say, "I have a gray Poodle," or "I have a fawn Great Dane," or "I have a black-and-tan Dachshund."

Yet I have heard people say, "I have an apricot Poodle," "I have a harlequin Great Dane," and "I have a dapple Dachshund."

So I guess it annoys me because it implies that either (1) there's a difference between yellow, brown, and black labs or (2) some acceptable colors are more "special" and "desirable" than others. This last bit is especially irksome because I participate in rescue and it's so much harder to find homes for labs that are black, even though it's the most common gene (and the original color).

Anyway, I can't think of a single other breed of dog where it's common to preface the breed name with the color.

Thoughts?

My wife and I have a yellow and a black. We love them both, and don't feel like there's anything "better" about either color. People ask about the color, but we usually don't include it as part of the introduction. We usually do say "English" to differentiate between them and American labs, but that's mostly because people are more familiar with American labs.

Probably because most people are familiar with labs in some way, they are interested in the color. It associates them with the labs they do know.

Well, English and American labs have actual physical differences.

You see a lot of white, gray, and black poodles (also a very popular breed), but no one ever says "I have a gray poodle" or "I have a black poodle."

It's weird. It would make a bit more sense if one color was like, the "default" - like, if 80% of labs owned were black. But it isn't. And it still wouldn't really make sense because people don't do that with any other breed.

I guess I'm one of those people that kinda sees the color as a distinguishing characteristic - like they're 3 different breeds in one somehow. I'd admit that I'm a bit of a snob, I'm really only a fan of the black ones shh In fact, I wasn't a "lab person" until I decided to temporarily foster Dessie until I found her a home. I found her a home...mine!

When I do think about why I feel that way, I think its weird. However, I think all the different colors make the breed look very different! Kinda like a fawn Great Dane vs a harlequin. I think they look very different!

On a funny side note, I had a guy that was trying to hit on me once when I had Dessie and he was like

Dude: "so, that's a lab, right?"
Me: "yeah"
Dude: "Chocolate?"
Me: "Uh, she's black, dude"
Dude (sheepishly) : "Black! Riiiight!"

lol. That still kills me.

Hi Dessie!

Im black too...and that is moms favorite of all the lab colors, but dad likes yellow best.

Mom never gives a color when she tells peeple what kind of dogs we are, I guess cause she used to only have 1, im a new addition to the household.

My father and I are both fans of black labs in particular. Yellows are okay, but chocolates I'm just not a fan of.

Perhaps it's because there are just the three very distinct solid colors unlike all the patterns on a lot of other breeds? Also, people will actually ask the color if you don't outright say it. Maybe we all have an opinion on our favorite Labs.

Mom will say "I have a lab." And people ask what color, but she says she has a chocolate lab because she's proud of me. She loves me and is proud to have a good old choco lab.

At my shelter it isn't harder to adopt out black labs, there is just so many of them.
