Hi! My 4 months old JRT, Crikey, seems to love lounging around in the yard, mostly in the morning. He doesn't seem to enjoy playing by himself very much. And it appears he doesn't find the yard very stimulating anymore. He also is midly interested by walks int he am.
I play with him when I can but he sometimes is only interested for a few minutes only. He seems to be the most active with us after dark.
He goes nuts when I take him for walks in the arvo, and cannot get enough of other dogs and humans!
My partner and I are thinking of getting a little friend for him... I am afraid he is bored and needs stimulation or he will become destructive!
Would another JRT be ideal for him? Male or female?
HELP PLEASE! I am wort of worried I am doing something wrong with him and that he isn;t happy frown

Many Jacks like to "Sun Their Buns", sometimes laying in the hot sun just relaxing. As far as him not playing by himself in the yard. Terriers don't usually play in a yard by themselves. Now how they might entertain themselves while left unattended in a yard may result in excessive digging, barking, escaping etc.

I suggest making a trip to your vet and have their thyroid checked as well as a complete blood panel done.

As far as getting a second JRT for him to play with, not necessarily the answer to what you see as a problem. Although Russells are "pack animals" they are bred to be independent and depending on the individual sometimes will tolerate a second Russell but not interact & play with them like you are hoping. How about arranging some playdates with your friends that have well socialized and non aggressive dogs? I don't recommend dog parks for several reasons.

If you decide that a second Ruseell is best for your situation I cannot express enough the importance of getting a Jack of the opposite sex. Also consider adopting an adult dog verses a puppy. By looking into adult Jacks you will learn that "what you see is what you get" as far as personality is considered. If the first adult Jack you have interest in, after watching the two dogs interact with each other,it is obvious that it isn't going to work, then you can find another available Russell needing a second chance. With a puppy there are many factors that determine what type of Jack they will have grown into when they are adult dogs.
