topanga is 3 years old....she has only been in heat once that i know of for sure...about 2 months ago.....i don't plan on breeding her but i have hesitated in having her spayed because i read in a book about irish setters that often after they were spayed their hair coarsened....has anyone ever heard this before? i thought it sounded crazy but am wondering......her hair is sooooo incredibly soft.....

dog Hello my name is Kathleen ,my dog is Chadwick on dogster, I had 3 setters before 1 male 2 females an yes there coat are changing . It become more corse and its changing color more beige . My females had to be spayd because my male was doing show and wasn't neuter.
I suggest that you wait ,if she ever have major health problems then spay her.
Have a nice day , Kathleen wavesnoopy

we spayed our setter and i didn't notice any change in her coat. she's still really red and super soft, except when she's due to go to the groomer. she gets ratty looking, but that's because she's hard to brush. she's a runner!

The earlier you spay, the better off your chances will be that your female won't get cancer. It greatly reduces the risk.

Well, yes. She will very likely get spay coat. It doesn't coarsen, in fact it gets softer. But it turns yellowy, and that beautiful shiny flat mahogany coat goes away. With a spay coat, you strip and strip and strip. It's hard on them as they get older, and lots of people just opt to clipper them at that point. We found a stripper called a Mars coat king that works well on spay coat without putting a lot of stress on the dog. I use it on all my Irish pet clients.

But please. Don't hesitate to get her spayed just because of the coat issues. The health risks of not doing it far outweigh the cosmetic issues. Some reproductive vets are now saying that every season shortens a dog's life. You're also removing an organ that can easily host cancer, and preventing having an Oops! litter which could be a serious financial strain to say nothing of the risks Topanga could face.

I can help you out with any grooming tips for Irish - been doing both show & pet grooming for 15 years. Seen and done it all.

my female is not spayed because after her mother had the last litter rubies litter her hair got raggedy and i brushed her all the time. and her hair got to where it wouldnt grow out for anything it stayed short witch is not typical for an Irish setter. so i have chosen not to get my Ruby spayed because of that reason unless it comes to health issues than of course anything in her intrests
