What do you think could be the issue with Bailey?

Yesterday I made Bailey a stew, with beef, sweet potatoes, green beans and carrots in the slow cooker. She has had all these ingredients before, so I didn't do a gradual intro from the other food she was eating. I didn't add anything, but it did have juices from the meat. Usually I rinse any meat I make her because she has an issue with fat, but I didn't this time.

Now, yesterday she ate her breakfast around 4 am. I went back to bed and my dad apparently got up and fed her about 2-3 cups of the plain oatmeal I had in the fridge for Sunny, who was dealing with diarrhea for a few days. I didn't realize he did it until later when I found her laid out, completely bloated looking and uncomfortable.

For dinner yesterday she had a blend of turkey, beef, and mixed veggies with a little egg.

This morning I woke up to a few piles of brown pudding. I walked her and she pooped once, a bit of orange pudding. She is acting fine, wanting to eat, wanting to walk, drinking and urinating normally.

Do you think it could be the stew? Or all that oatmeal? I would have thought the oatmeal would have bound her up, but then my mother said it may have acted as roughage. Or do you think maybe they have a bit of a bug since Sunny had the same thing for the past few days?

Her breakfast was the lighter turkey/beef stuff with the veggies and a little egg. I won't feed her again until this evening, but I was going to go with just some rice.

You can tell its a holiday, one of my dogs is sick.

Yes, good job dogs! Holidays are the only time to get sick or act like you are sick.

2 or 3 cups of oatmeal? For a puggle? I definitely think that is the culprit. Sassy cannot hold but 12-14 ounces in her stomach at once. What a trooper keeping all that down.

Brown and soft makes me think too much food. When I overfed Sassy to fatten her up that is what happened. Could be more frequent just because of the amount she ate. 2-3 cups? Really?

I hate depriving my dogs so I would feed rice tonight IF there isn't more than one more soft poop. If there was, no food for her until tomorrow. Don't want to push the system if it is still upset by that overload.

She is now vomiting. It was undigested stew from the morning. Her stomach seems empty now because she is basically vomiting mucous. She has also had two more splats.

All these foods are foods she has eaten in the past, so I am more than a little worried. She has not had a stomach issue in three months and now this.

Ugh, it doesn't help that every time she vomits I have a pug trying to help her.

When do you know when it is time to go to the e vet?

Standard remedy for diarrhea and vomiting is to let the system rest by fasting for at least 12 hours. 24 is better. Smart dogs won't eat and that scares us as well but it is best. Make sure there is water going in an hour after the last vomit/diarrhea not before! A tiny bit of water at first. After the fast and if there hasn't been more vomiting or diarrhea then feed a tiny bit of bland chicken and rice every hour or so. I never had but as far as I know chicken broth jello or ice cubes should be fine as liquids.

At any time if you get worried that the dog is getting dehydrated then go to the vet. If the upset worries you go to the vet. Vets don't really want to see grown dogs until the problem has lasted at least a day with the fasting and limited water. Too bad, if I am worried I go to the vet!

Dehydration. Pale and sticky gums. Dry nose. Scruff of neck stays when pulled up. Sassy has a huge amount of skin around her neck so that doesn't work at all, if I ruffle her fur it doesn't go back into place though.

I usually give my dogs some Pepto Bismol when they vomit or have diarrhea. I have a syringe I kept from one of their med.

The typical dose administered to dogs is 0.5 to 1.5 ml per pound per day (1 to 3 ml/kg/day). The total daily dose should be divided into two to four doses. This amounts to approximately 2 teaspoons (10 ml total) per 10-pounds per day, ideally split between two to four doses.

I also give them baby food (make sure no onion powder) mixed with hot water to thin it out for 1 -2 days. Poor baby.

Having ingredients one at a time is totally different than all at once! Richness of the fat alone would make a dog blow out!

My suggestion and remedy, NO FOOD for breakfast (and preferably dinner too!) Let their system restart itself. If you feel obligated to feed dinner, cook up some plain white rice- you dont even need chicken. Give 1/2 the amount the dog normally eats. So if your dog eats 1 cup per meal give them 1/2 cup of white rice per meal. Let this settle in their stomachs and you can give them their full meal the next morning if theyve kept it down. So ideally you want 1 day of no food, 1 day of 1/2 meals and the 3rd day start mixing their food back into the rice mixture.

As with any diarrhea, they will need to be taken outside more frequently or else you will find messes all over your house. Keep an eye on the stool and vomit. If its yellow/bile/mucus, the tummy is empty. If food comes up, well obviously.
For stools, you want to keep an eye out for any dark tar coloring, or blood as these could indicate a more serious intestinal problem and you should go see a vet.

Otherwise, skip at least 1 meal and restart the system with 1/2 amounts of plain white rice (you can add a bit of chicken broth or yogurt for taste). And GRADUALLY go back to full meals, assuming everything is kept down and in.

If the diarrhea/vommiting lasts more than 2 days, go see a vet and they will give you meds for him.

Best advice I can give you.... "What doesnt go in, cant come out!" Very important lesson when dealing with diarrhea dogs!

She had a rocky day yesterday. She was feeling crummy but perked up a bit, which made me worry less.

I am going to get rid of the stew mixture, even though she had all those ingredients at the same time before, maybe this cut of beef just wasn't her thing. Other than that I can't come up with what the issue could have been. Sunny did have diarrhea last week, so maybe a bug is going through my monsters? Who knows. Bailey has such a history of stomach ailments and with her other problems, I tend to freak about her. Sunny I just gave a little oatmeal to and she was fine.

Bailey did want to eat this morning which made me feel alot better. She had a very small amount of chicken and rice and water and kept it down and in, so we should be good. I will feed her again a small amount after work today.

Thanks for the help pups. This dog gives me more gray hairs than any other dog I have owned. wink

ITS ALL MINE

I agree with the others that its still something new to her digestive system because they were mixed. I have found that its ALWAYS better to limit the amounts my two eat at once, especially if its particularly rich. With mine its not a matter of if they had it before or not.

When we do have an issue with upset tummy, we cut back on new food intake for at least 12 hours. I don't go to the vet for these things unless it seems like the stomach is particularly tight (Bloat symptoms)

I have noticed that when I am using rolled oats instead of rice, it seems the oats absorb more of the grease. Its just much more dense when its done, and tends to sit in their tummy like a brick if they get too much. shrug
