Just to give a slightly different pov. Our vet said dog shampoo or baby shampoo are both fine. Baby shampoo is gentle on eyes and soft coats too.
I have used both, and Toby comes out softer with the baby stuff. Johnson and johnson no tears if it makes a difference.

I've used baby shampoo in a pinch but my dogs get bathed no more than monthly and typically 2-3 times a year is all (for the Border Collies, Cassie is a bit more due to therapy work). Marvin spends 80% of his time outdoors and never has that doggie odor. I bathe them when I can feel the dirt in their coats.

No tear shampoo isn't tearless because it is gentle. It is tearless because it has a chemical in that that numbs the area. Nothing I want on my dogs - or my babies when I was having them.

Human shampoo isn't formulated for dogs. The PH is different. However baby shampoo no tears formula okay. It doesn't cost that much extra to buy a dog shampoo. Also, no flea and tick shampoo in dogs under six months old unless under direction of veterinarian. Especially under six weeks old.

Baby shampoo does NOT have a numbing agent in it. The Ph is simply formulated to be equal to the human eye. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/442292.html

Dog shampoo is around 2 points less acid than people shampoo. So, it is safe (and gentle) to use dog shampoo on people but not the other way round. Try it for awhile and see.

Professional dog shampoo (not the crap you buy off the shelf at the chain pet store) is also cheaper by a long shot than people shampoo because professional groomers use a concentrated solution which dilutes down before use. I like DoubleK Ultimate all natural which dilutes at 50:1 ratio with water. A teaspoon of shampoo concentrate makes a quart of dog wash. Compare a $30 gallon (128 ounces) of DoubleK to an .89 bottle of Suave (22 ounces) and factor in dilution ratios. Big savings.

If you condition your dog every time you wash it you can wash it daily. I'll say that again. If you condition your dog every time you wash it you can wash it daily. People who show dogs wash/condition/dry their dogs daily or sometimes multiple times daily to keep their coats show ready.

We recommend Buddy Wash as a shampoo. It is super-gentle and the lavender and mint smell is HEAVENLY! Momma has washed her own hair with our Buddy Wash a couple of times because she loves the smell so much! Our crew gets bathed about every two weeks in the summer because we're outside getting good and filthy... during the winter we get bathed less. We're on a raw diet, so we really don't have any "doggy odor" going on and our breath doesn't smell either! Hooray for raw diet and Buddy Wash: official sponsors of us looking GOOD! cheercheercheer
