I absolutely love Great Danes & as my husband & I are thinking about getting a new bigger dog I was wondering about Danes? How much exercise do they need? How are they with smaller animals & children? I am currently a college student but the latest my classes go are 12:50, so I would be gone from about 7:30-1:15. Other than that I am home all day, we have 2 shih tzus.
Can you guys help me out?big grin

Danes do just fine with smaller dogs and animals, and kids! If the size difference is extreme, I would keep the tiny breeds separate from the Dane while I'm away. Danes tend to be "tiny dogs" trapped in a horse sized body. This sometimes gets them into trouble, especially when young. They don't realize how big and strong they are. They could accidentally hurt the tiny guys and not even mean to. Danes dont need a whole lot of exersize. They are rambuctious puppies while they're puppies, but are basically couch potatoes. A good romp out side everyday sould be just fine for them. They are more social than active. I may be biased, but you can't do better than a Dane!!!!!

From what I have heard about them, they seem to fit with my lifestyle very well. We want a big dog, with medium energy, good with children & smaller animals, trainable, loving, will go for walks with us but is also just fine with cuddling with us on the couch. We have a yard & I am home most of the day, we love our dogs more than anything & can't wait to add a bigger dog to the mix. I will definatly socialize the puppy well & work with all training.
So it seems as though a Dane will fit in very well with us & our 2 tzus, although we will be waiting a while since Giz is still a puppy. We will also probably be rescuing one, I just love the thought of saving a dogs life, we havent rescued either of our dogs persay. But neither of them were in good situations before we got them.
Thanks for the infobig grin
