I have really wanted a dog, and more specifically a Great Dane, for some time. Growing up I always had a dog and other animals. My concern is that my wife and I work 9-5 and I want to make sure that my dog has enough attention. We would each be able to take an hour lunch to go home and that way it breaks up the day. But I have read so much about how all Great Danes want is to be with their family. But I also figure that if we broke it up then the dog wouldn't be alone all day. I would love any input especially on Danes specifically. shrug

If the two of you are able to each take an hour lunch break that would help out immensely. An older dog would also be a good choice.

Please make sure you research breeders carefully. Also please do consider rescue. Don't forget to use The Great Dane Club of America as a resource.

The biggest concern would be potty breaking a puppy. They would need to be let out about every 3 hrs. If one of you could come home at lunch and the other in the afternoon, it would work out well. A good choice would be an older pup, then you wouldn't need to worry so much about potty training. Be prepared for crazy play time when you get home tho. Danes do fine at home with out you, they're usually asleep on the couch all day. Granted, given the choice, they'd rather be with you. Do you have any other animals? If you're worried about lonelyness, I know it sounds strange, but get ur pup a cat. Make sure it's a little older kitten, preferably one that's already been around dogs. a 6 mo old dane and a 4-5 month old kitten is a good combo. they're both young enuf to accept each other, but old enuf to get along. I don't know your stand on cats, but it is a really good combo. the kitty will teach your dane to be gentle with smaller critters (lets face it, most critters will be smaller than a dane!) and it gives the pup companionship without worry of someone getting hurt in wild puppy play while you're out.
