Should I get a Golden?

My hubby and I are starting to think about getting a new dog. Of course it may be a while before we get one, but we want to research breeds and find one that will suit our family and lifestyle.
We would like a dog with middle energy level, good with children & smaller dogs, trainable, that will like to hike & maybe jog, likes to cuddle and be with us, will alert us to visitors, but be personable. We currently have 2 shih tzus, and will probably always have one because they are a breed after my heart. Grooming & shedding are no issue, we know all about grooming as we have 2 tzus.
The other dogs we are considering at the moment are: Bernese Mountain Dog, Labs, & maybe a weaton terrier(although we would like a bit larger).
Please let me know some more details about Goldens & if one would be suitable for us?blue dog

Golden Retrievers are one of the sweetest and friendliest dogs there is. They are friendly with everyone (strangers, other dogs, and children), energetic, and very loving. They do need daily exercise, but not as much exercise as the other Retrievers. Hiking and jogging are good activities to enjoy with a Golden. They don't bark very much, but might let you know when someone's at the door.

If you do get a Golden, you won't be sorry you did. smile

I have had a Wheaten Terrier for almost a year now, and she is a great dog. While it's true that she's not as huge as a Golden would be, she is definitely a big dog, and you'll notice that especially if you have Shi Tzus. We have two sets of friends with Tzus, and our Wheaten loves playing with them when they come over. I also know a few people with Shi Tzus and Wheatens both, and they make great companions for each other.

I'm not trying to talk you out of a Golden...I've never had one and I'd not be posting here if I wasn't interested in them too, but I ultimately went with a Wheaten and she's the best dog I've ever had.

I actually love the idea of a wheaten, although I have never had one or even met one, from everything that I have read they seem like the dog for us. My hubby is a little skeptical because he says that they look like a poodle & he wants a manly dog, but he doesnt realize that they are a bit larger than he thinks. I dont see the poodleness, I think they look likemy fluffy little 11 week old shih tzu. I am going to keep talking to him about it & try to show him why they are the right dog for us. The only problem that I can see with it is the fact that we want to rescue & I dont know how many there are in rescues around us.

I really like Goldens also, I have seen millions of them laugh out loud & love them. Really we have it down to a Golden & a Wheaten. Hopefully we can make a decision & get a new member of our family soon.blue dog

Sounds like our situation a year ago....these are two of the three breeds I had it narrowed down to, also (the other was an Australian Shepherd).

I was a little worried about the poodle appearance as well...I didn't want a dog that I would be embarassed to be seen walking down the street. Haha. Turns out, it has never been an issue. It's all in the grooming...you tell the groomer what you want and that's what you'll get. Besides, these dogs are so far from poodles it isn't funny.

One more thing I wanted to add....the deal-breaker (or maker) was that Goldens shed a lot. I'm a pretty neat person, and didn't like the idea of having to vacuum every single day. Wheatens barely shed at all......

I noticed that you were looking at labs. Labs have higher energy levels. If you would like a dog that is strictly medium energy levels I would say no to labs. If you would like a Labrador, I would reccomend an older, rescued lab so you can tell what their energy is like before you bring them home.

Remember goldens and labs are both known to be puppies until they reach two years old. My seven year old Lab still acts like a puppy.
