Max gets 50-60 grams of protein a day in 10-12 ounces of raw food. On 22% protein kibble he got about 35-40 grams a day. He would get about 150 grams of a calorie dense kibble per day and if it were one like Orijen he would again be eating about 50-60 grams of protein a day. His raw weighs 10-12 ounces and the Orijen weighs 5.3 ounces due to water content. I use nutritiondata.com to add up what he gets which gets its data from USDA and I know what goes into the dog.

Take the water out and you can easily compare raw to cooked to kibble to canned. And Max who is definitely a weekend warrior couch potato definitely needs the protein.

Back when it first came out I tried EVO and failed. It was impossible for me to feed the teensy amount he needed so his poop stayed a bit sloppy although he never gained weight from the overfeeding. I know I could never feed something like Ziwi Peak for the same reason.

Still, too bad the dogs never actually got 32% protein. Perhaps Max would have developed muscle on that level protein. Sassy never had problems with muscle mass until she was very very old and ill on ~22% protein food and her condition did improve when I figured out how to give her about 28% protein.

Zach - Actually, several unrelated studies prove that working dogs, specifically sled dogs, perform better with only about 15% energy from carbs. Protein can be anywhere from 32% to 40% with the rest coming from fat.

This is an interesting thread. In true Dogster fashion, I have a spin off comment and questions.

I have been feeding grain free kibble with either canned , home cooked, freeze dried raw, frequently with a bit of yogurt mixed in.
A few months ago Snickers began to reek from impacted stool. He wouldn't or couldn't empty is bowels twice a day. After two trips to the Vet, she suggested trying something other than grain free to provide more fiber. Ugh. So in addition to the stool softener and added water to is meals I switched him to a grain based food. Darn it, it solved the problem. Since he's been regular for a long time, I'm trying to switch him back.

He's 9 years old, his weight and muscled tone were unaffected. He does feel better. He's been playing.
He's been playful with me and Pepper and getting along well with Sonny.
Snickers has NEVER been playful.

On the other end of things, Pepper has always been so thin, active and playful. Even restricting her to the leash didn't put weight on her. I switched her to a higher calorie food and added some Ziwi Peak freeze dried raw.

Sonny gets hyper and his doggy ADHD seems worse if he isn't on a meat based diet. But he gains weight on a meat based food even if I keep his calories the same.

AHG! I don't mind feeding 3 custom meals twice a day. But why? What gives?

I think its an odd suggestion to switch a dog off of a grain free food to a grain inclusive one, for the sole benefit of more fiber.

Grain free foods still contain fiber... and honestly, most GF foods are JUST as carb heavy as non-GF, they just use potatoes/peas/lentils/etc instead of rice or corn.

Maybe there's a difference in a food like Orijen or Evo or something, where the meat content really is higher... but I personally wouldn't see much benefit from switching from a food like ToTW, to something like Chicken Soup or Eagle Pack OTHER than allergies or an intolerance/etc.
