Dogs are sick and dying, yet tainted chicken jerky is still on store shelves across the country. Because the FDA has not been able to pinpoint the contaminant, pet treat companies are not voluntarily recalling. All pets in danger! Here's an article with the whole scoop: FDA Warns Pets Being Poisoned: Manufacturers Refuse Recall Treats are causing kidney/liver failure and a rare kidney disease called Fanconi's Syndrome. If you have been feeding jerky treats and your dog is sick or has died, please join the facebook group: Animal Parents Against Pet Treats Made in China

I think this article will explain why chicken jerky treats are still on the shelf. It made me so mad when I read it.

I for personal reasons choose to avoid facebook like the plague. I however no longer worry about where my pups treats are made because I make them at home with my oven or food dehydrator. Since I am the one who makes them I know where they come from and exactly what is in there.

My friend's dog died last month after eating a jerky treat. She went from healthy to dead in 1 1/2 weeks. We lost a healthy Golden in the first dog food recall. It's horrible to watch them suffer from something that, at the time, we didn't know what caused it. It got to he point where we just couldn't let him suffer anymore. I honestly don't think there's anything we can do to stop/prevent the tainted food & treats because of big business & greed. What we can do is choose carefully what we feed our pets by reading the labels and asking very detailed questions. If they don't give reasonable answers, don't buy it. If I had the time, I would feed home cooked and urge everyone else to do it, so the pet companies wake up. One week of no dog food/treat sales and they may get with the program.

I don't understand the point of a recall if not even the FDA can tell the companies why they need to pull. And the companies can't fix a problem if they don't know what to fix. Nothing as yet come up.

Just don't be cheap - stop buying chicken treats made in China. USA made treats seem to be fine. Haven't we all learned this lesson?

From http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/11/chicken-jerky-pet-treat-alert/ :

""FDA," Ms. Alvey reported to me by email, "is actively investigating the matter and conducting analysis for multiple different chemical and microbiological contaminants. We have tested numerous samples of chicken jerky products for possible contaminants including melamine. The complaints received have been on various chicken jerky products but to date we have not detected any contaminants and therefore have not issued a recall or implicated any products. We are continuing to test and will notify the public if we find evidence of any contaminants."

AND

"The quantity of chicken jerky consumed could not be determined; however, based on the histories obtained, the chicken jerky treats were a significant part of the diet and were consumed daily by all dogs."

If you’re looking for a SAFE, REAL ‘American Made’ chicken jerky for dogs, we started making our own Chicken Jerky for our 3 dogs in after we ran across the FDA warning of 2008. It turned into a cottage "Mom & Pop" business and we now sell our TriPom Chews online and in 20 stores in the New England area. Our products are the only homemade, handmade, ‘Maine Made’, ‘American Made’ Chicken Jerky produced from whole, restaurant-quality chicken breasts containing NO Additives and NO Preservatives.

Up until very recently, I bought the Dogswell Vitality Chicken Breast treats for Noah. He loved them and we never had a problem with them. But since I've read so much about these types of treats that are made in China causing so many problems that I switched to Colorado Naturals. The price is almost the same and Noah certainly can't tell the difference.

Maybe we can just stop letting anything from China be let into the country when it comes to food. Or maybe high fines against these companies could be done. But I know it will never happen because the US owes to muhc money to china

My lil dog, Boogie, just died of acute kidney failure after being diagnosed just 4 weeks ago. He jogged with me almost every day for the last 12 yrs.and was in top physical condition UNTIL I gave him Vitality Doggswell minis chicken breast with flaxseed and vitamins, bought on June 20, 2012 at the local Petco. He got sick by July 7, 2012; and had to be put to sleep on 7/31/12. WHEN does a FDA warning turn into a RECALL. A class action suit must be initiated!
