Zephyr..if I am doing liver-slivers, or plain salmon skin I just do it in my oven. Low heat..~200-250 & keep turning them every hour or so. It takes about 3-4 hours, depending on thickness. I go by feel..if they will bend, but not break I leave them longer.

Chicken livers or cow livers? I'm really tempted to try making my own since liver is cheap and prevalent.

I do beef liver for the slivers..it is easier to get clean thin slices. I have used a blender to puree chicken livers & hearts, then add a bit of oatmeal as a binder. Spread on a cookie sheet & bake the same way.

Awesome! I can not believe they sell dried liver for $15 in pet stores, but at the grocery store you can get 3X the amount for about $2. That is what spurred me on to make my own.

I know! I mean it's great to have the handy little treats but $9 (with my discount card) for a bag which will last me a week and a half if I use them exclusive for 4 dogs... No.

Kaiser gets Wellness Just for Puppy treats, which are nice and soft and can be cut or torn into little bits. He also really likes freeze dried liver, it is more for special occasions. Human food is also appreciated, but I only give that in tiny amounts.

"For people who make their own treats, do you use a dehydrator or something else to make them?"

I just use the oven too because I don't have a dehydrator and it seems to work well in the oven, just easy to overcook too long. Not that the dogs mind!

Adam how do you make dehydrated chicken strips in the oven. I thought you would need a dehydrator to make them. That's one of the few treats Beauregard can have but we don't buy him the store bought ones because they are made in China.

Dehydrated chicken, dehydrated chicken and banana, dehydrated beef liver. Fresh banana, just for fun. Zuke's minis make great training treats, they like the salmon ones and the peanut butter ones. Also cheddar cheese cut into cubes (they don't like string cheese).

My dogs aren't excited about kibble for treats, and they don't like traditional baked biscuits.
