There's not really any dog foods out there that will do your dogs any harm. Yes, I know some dogs have allergies so certain things have to be avoided but, I don't think people should think that they "have" to buy a dog food that does and doesn't have certain things in it. If your budget only allowes you to buy a cheaper brands then there's nothing wrong with it. Some foods will keep your dogs in optimal health, some will keep them in average health and some will give them a healthy-ish and happy life. There are loads of dogs in the world that eat supermarket bought food and live very well on it.
I am not saying that people on this site say you "have" to feed certain foods but after reading the post about being on a budget it made me think that perhaps people feel they have to feed better foods. I'm sure the person is only trying to give her dog the best on her budget but supermarket bought dog food is acceptable if it's all you can afford.
I feed Orijen because I like it and can afford it but, if my financial circumstances change I will feed supermarket bought food if I have to.

"There's not really any dog foods out there that will do your dogs any harm."
Dogs are versatile creatures. I've heard of dogs living off of bread and water. Keep in mind that surviving and thriving are not the same thing.
And that they won't do your dog any harm is both right and wrong. Here, here's an article that relates to this:
http://rawfed.com/myths/kibble.html
Also, when I read about the increase of cancer on today's pets, I do wonder. Most of the dogs filling veterinary waiting rooms are after all fed brands like Purina or Ol Roy.

True, no one should ever "have" to do something. If they honestly can't afford a good food, that's perfectly fine. I can understand that perfectly well. Just get the best they can afford. Or if they've done their research and have come to the conclusion that Purina isn't so bad after all, well that's their opinion.
"There are loads of dogs in the world that eat supermarket bought food and live very well on it."
Yep. Just as many people live decent lives eating lots of junk food, which I'm also guilty of. My dogs eat much much better than I do.

Just recently this was posted:
[...]and I actually found that for Farley, it would only cost me $3.33 more/month to buy Orijen adult in place of Kibbles n' Bits Wholesome Medley! I was shocked!
I also found it would cost me $4.75 LESS/month to feed Acana adult rather than KnB!
I was also surprised at how expensive Eukanuba is. Their Naturally Wild salmon/rice formula would be costing me $13.77 MORE/month than Orijen!
Some dogs may seem healthy on a diet of corn gluten meal found in "cheap" grocery brands, but it's not as healthy as a diet composed of animal based proteins.
Compared with dogs fed a diet with 100% chicken protein, dogs fed diets with decreasing levels of chicken and increasing levels of corn gluten meal had
* decreased lean tissue
* increased body fat
* decreased levels of blood proteins routinely used as markers of superior nutritional status
This was independent of the overall dietary protein level (12 or 28%), which was also examined in each of the four test groups.
As dogs age, body composition and muscle-specific proteins decline. Therefore, another study looked at the differences between feeding senior dogs a 32%-protein chicken-based diet, a 32%-protein chicken and corn gluten meal diet, or a 16%-protein chicken-based diet.
Senior dogs fed the 32%-chicken protein, chicken-based diet had better body composition and a muscle-specific protein pattern identical to that in healthy young adult dogs. However, those results were not seen in either of the other two diets. http://www.iams.com/iams/pet-health/protein-in-dog-foods.jsp

Especially considering the cheap stuff they put in it. IAMS is one that is insane the price. Purina another thats enough money. Especially considering I probably would have to feed at least double the amount that I am feeding just to keep my dogs weight what it is thus going through the bag twice as fast. But there are some actual cheap foods out there like Healthwise for instance, premium edge is another. Lots of options out there.

| Barked: Sat Nov 7, '09 5:59am PST | | | | | | Sedona has it right, as always! Anyway...there was a customer that came into the store yesterday to buy Iams, which we had on sale. Other dog foods were on sale, too. She started complaining about the food and how she would feed better, but the "wholistic, natural stuff" was just sooo expensive! Well...low and behold, another customer (who actually knew this one personally) was picking up a big bag of Canidae that was on sale. She started to explain that her dogs were eating Iams before she started on Canidae and how she is actually spending the same now or even saving money. She said that she doesn't go to the vet as often (she has goldens) with hotspots, itchies, etc. She said they eat way less of the Canidae and the most important factor for her was way less poop in the yard to clean up! The customer who was complaining didn't want to listen to me, but she listened to her friend! I just stood there with a great big smile on my face. It's always wonderful when another customer does your job for you and reveals we do know what we're talking about! Anyway, she left with the canidae and a small bag of Iams to use to switch over. They actually cost the same hahaha! I thanked her friend and she said, "No problem, because my dogs are proof that feeding the better foods are the better way to go." | | | | |

Well, I suppose the recalls and what not happened in the US only? Perhaps? But lots of people's dogs and cats died because of dog foods/cat foods they were on..
Plus, "harm" is somewhat subjectively defined. If you mean like poison, and they'll eat it and have acute symptoms, probably not. Harm as in, they'll have dull flakey skin, tons of poop, and eating something you know is biologically inappropriate.. well.. that's loads of "harm" to me when I can clearly the see that the food isn't doing what it should for the dogs..

| Barked: Sat Nov 7, '09 7:17am PST | | | | | | As for spending more for holistic foods, it's not entirely true. A friend of my mother was feeding her min pin Rachel Ray's Nutrish. She was spending I think 20 dollars on on a bag of it, and thought she was feeding good food. I told her about other brands, holistic brands, that she could be spending 20 dollars on, even 15! She needed a holistic brand that was easy to find around here, and easy to get, so after a long talk about by-products, corn, ect. We got her to actually switch to Blue. ^^ She is paying the same price AS the Nutrish if not lower. | | | | |

Often, people can afford them, but choose to afford a better car, cable, luxury foods, high-speed internet... for themselves instead. I do wonder how people who can't afford decent dog food afford their dog’s medical care.
I have heard many times that the very cheap stuff like ol roy can do your dog harm and significantly shorten many dogs’ lives. Some shelters won't even accept donations of Ol roy. If you are feeding a better supermarket food, might as well feed a good food because it is close to the same price.
Some stray dogs live on garbage, that doesn't mean that garbage is good to feed your dog.
