Maybe a dumb question- can a lower protein food lower a dog's energy?

Protein isn't for energy. It's more a component of building tissue and muscle. Humans get their energy from carbs. Dogs get energy from fat. So, if energy is your concern, don't go low fat.

The study done on protein levels under 25% indicated that dogs suffered more injuries on the lower protein foods. But over 30% didn't seem to make a marked improvement in the dog's health. There was some concern over high protein and kidney enlargement.

I can't make up my mind, so I mix a grain free and a grained food. Keeps the protein at a reasonable level and keeps my dogs strong and healthy.

Hey Lily- thanks for the info.

I remember Sedona mentioned the protein %s as well. We got a super deal on this bag of Wellness Lamb $8! So, I wanted to try it out and see if Jas is sensitve to lamb. I am so happy he is not showing any symptoms whatsoever. I feel ok for now that I am feeding him a lower protein food, but I think it makes sense to be consistent with protein, fat and calorie levels for the most part. The Wellness Small Breed looks great 28% protein and nice and small kibble...but it has chicken and turkey in it. We are trying to take it slow with introducing new proteins just to make sure we can catch allergic symptoms. way to go

This may make you feel a little better Lily -

Robertson JL, Goldschmidt M, Kronfeld DS, Tomaszewski JE, Hill GS, Bovee KC: Long-term renal responses to high dietary protein in dogs with 75% nephrectomy.

Dogs fed 56 and 27% protein had increased GFR and CPAH before and after reduction of renal mass compared to the 19% group. A pattern of deterioration of renal function, including proteinuria, was not found in any diet group. Nine of 11 dogs, fed 56, 27, or 19% protein had minimal glomerular lesions, including mesangial proliferation, GBM irregularities, adhesions, and sclerosis. Two other dogs, fed 56% protein, had more severe glomerular lesions. No significant ultrastructural differences were found in glomeruli among the three diet groups. These results do not support the hypothesis that high protein feeding had a significant adverse effect on either renal function of morphology in dogs with 75% nephrectomy. These results do not support the hypothesis that high protein feeding had a significant adverse effect on either renal function of morphology in dogs with 75% nephrectomy.

The dogs in this study barely had functioning kidneys and the high protein foods were really no worse than the low protein foods.

Interesting study there Sedona. I've alway been a little bit paranoid about the high level protein foods, but I can probably thank the vet for that. The more I read about it, the more it sounds like I really don't have to be concerned. I'd really like to get the new Evo into our rotation.

Thanks Sedona for the article info way to go

Sara- I too have been a little concerned about the higher protein foods- not for renal reasons, but because the are really rich. Jasper did not do well on Orijen at all, but seems to do well in the 20s-30s ranges of protein shrug

Hi Jasper's Mom,
You are being a responsible parent. We all get paranoid over our pets all the time so you are just one of the gang here.

From what I have observed over the last few years, working with pets, is that they can have allergies just like we do, food, environmental. The only way to really know what they are allergic to is allergy tests which tend to be a little spendy so most pet owners try rotating pet foods, which can be frustrating trying to find the right combination.

Sounds like Jasper has gotten his energy back after the allergy season has pretty much wrapped up.

From what I understand puppy kibble should have higher proteins for growth. Working dogs such as herding dogs and those that do agility may need higher protein due to all their activity. A dog that needs to lose weight would be on less proteins. Most of the dog kibble products I have researched have an average of 28-32% for an adult dog.

Good luck finding the right combination for Jasper, he is so cute.

Thanks Zoie for the sweet message! cloud 9

Thank you for the info on protein as well. Jasper is little- average height for a Mini Poodle, but in my opinion he could stand to gain some weight! Sounds like more protein (than 22%) might be a better idea for him. I also notice he seems to prefer the Core more than the lamb. He does not get too excited about the lamb- could be because it is less meaty.shrug

We might do allergy testing- but it would have to be after the holidays- since we have PetPlan and they take a month to reimburse. I am hopeful if I do the protein experimenting over the winter I might have a clearer picture of things.

You are cute too!puppy

Jasper, have you tried buying some Wellness 95% meat cans to test? Buy all the varieties, feed one and leave 2 days to see if she reacts in any way? it's better then buying a huge bag of kibble, then having to take it back if it contains a problem-protein.

Hi Chocolate wave

We have eliminated canned from Jasper's diet- he won't eat the kibble if we add canned. laugh out loud

We traded in the lamb Wellness yesterday for CORE and now we are back on track! I think he just perfers the CORE...so I am hoping if all goes well we can rotate the Ocean with the Original- makes it easy and he gets some variety.

Thanks again everyone!
