bully stick warning

We are currently dog-sitting a mastiff puppy for friends (yay I have 3 mastiffs in my house right now, it feels so RIGHT!) and I gave him and Reyna some bully sticks to chew on the other day. Well, MOST dogs chew them horizontally, but Atliss flipped his vertical. I saw him with it hanging partially out of his mouth, but he was making the fish face so I knew he was choking! I hurried up and grabbed it out and took all the bully sticks away. Considering the size of the bully and how little was sticking out of his mouth, it was definitely stuck down his throat.
Soo...Just a warning. Our guys love these things, and I know Atliss' parents give them at home, but I will be letting them know to also never feed them unattended!!!

I always make sure my dogs are supervised when eating their bully sticks. Bosley is a gulper, so I make sure to take it away from him before it gets too small (about 5 inches or so). I then give the end pieces to friends who have little dogs. There is still a lot of chewing to be had by a small dog on a piece that size, but for my big guys, I don't like to take the chance.

Addy's a chewer, not a gulper, but I never let her have a bully stick unattended, and it gets tossed when she's chewed it down far enough that she could swallow it and choke on it.

I just wanted to clarify... This was a puppy, and this bully stick had hardly been chewed. It was still pretty significant in size, it just happened to be that he turned it vertical and lodged it in his throat. Even the big ones could pose a danger!!!

We have bully sticks all the time unsupervised. We give 12 inch bully sticks and take them away at about 4 inches. I think that its very important to supervise if you aren't sure how your dogs will eat them and also look at sizes. I would think that it would be much easier for a mastiff to choke on the same sized stick you would feed a chihuahua. Thanks for sharing your story. I am glad doggies are okay and hope accident doesn't happen again.

Glad everyone is ok.

Baron likes Bully sticks also... when i get them i always get the thick ones and 6 inchers... only letting him chew them down about 1/2 way but it seems that he chewes them from the side moreso than the end... and he ia always supervised...

Thanks for the warnning bam bam.
