Oliver (almost 1) started out from the rescue on Beneful but I slowly weaned him off to Nutro Ultra Small Breed, which he did well on. I heard Natural Balance was better so I gradually switched about 4 mos ago. Most days he just has one BM a day but for the past 2 wks, he's gone once and then, at the end, he strains and gets diarrhea. Last night he diarrhea was really bad so I boiled chicken and rice and gave him canned pumpkin. He's never been like this and might have picked something up. Still, I'd like to get his stool more compact and firmer.

I've heard so much about no grain, BARF, etc but everyone seems to have different luck with how it affects the stool. I don't think he's allergic to anything and seems to feel fine but I think his coat could be thicker (after he lost his puppy coat, no itching but thinner fur) and his GI tract functioning better. I've tried probiotics and that didn't seem to matter.

He likes the natural balance. Would trying the grain free one help? I tried a sample of Canidae and he didn't like it. I really want to give him a good quality kibble because he's fussy with crunchy treats and getting his teeth brushed.

Thanks. New to this site! Looking forward to the info...blue dog

Merrick's and Wellness and Zuke's are also quite good brands of dog food and treats. Lots of good nutrients and real, whole foods.

The sweet potato and fish helped Brodie w/his allergies and gave him firmer stool.
Messy poo is one form of food allergy (digestion issues)

You seem to like Natural Balance, you can try a grain free formula.
They have:
Sweet Potato and Venison
Sweet Potato and Chicken
Potato and Duck (They do have small bites too)
Sweet Potato and Fish

We are small breed and we eat the regular size kibbles...

Our favorite and best results on Natural Balance is Sweet Potatoe and venison.

Duck formula caused us mushy poo's so we went back to venison.

Ive also heard other shih tzu owners that the fish and duck formula also at times caused mushy poo's.....

So im sticking with the venison from now on and not taking any chances

The Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish is not high in Protiens and it was recommended by dogfoodanalysis.com that it needs to be supplemented with an addition protein source. My cavaliers were on it , my ruby lost interest in it, while on it her coat got dry and dull. Neither had any energy and my littles cav seemed to be hungry all the time and she was passed stool (firm) at least 4 times a day.

I switched to Innova canned and dry and a little Evanger's gold mixed in..result tiny poo (means their body is absorbing more from the foods) Their coats are shiny, richer & deeper in color.

I did a fod comparison analysis on my WordPress blog it may help if you are looking for better ingredients in foods.

Hope it helps
