Hudson
he's one in a- million!!!! |
| Barked: Thu Jul 2, '09 5:22pm PST | | | | | | hudson & nate both had a bug or something recently (nothing came up in the fecal test) but they had diarrhea. hudson's was really bad & he was treated with iv fluids (under the skin & in the veins) along with iv antibiotics & ranitidine. he also had a fever & came home with a weeks worth of meds...thankfully he is doing much better now!! our vet had suggested that for 1 wk hudson eat egg whites & cottage cheese (i poached the egg whites). our vet suggested egg whites for hudson as he is allergic to rice. nate was on rice & cottage cheese for a few days & he too is thankful much better. | | | | |

Stella- "Blue"
Puttin' my freak- on!
|
| Barked: Sat Jul 4, '09 7:17am PST | | | | | | Interesting, because I had the opposite result. When I went from rice and meat to grain free, the girls had better poop (though not right away)... then I switched to raw (all meat) and it was even smaller and firmer...
definitely depends on the dog.
I do have a question though... why do you say it has to be white rice and no oatmeal for now. I would THINK that brown rice and or oatmeal would be a better option because they are at least more nutritious. A friend of mine who home cooked switch from white rice to brown and saw improvement in his pups coat, stools, and general sense of well being (she was an old girl a the time) from that simple switch. While I don't feed cooked or kibble anymore, I like to be in the know

| Barked: Wed Jul 8, '09 8:17am PST | | | | | | Thank you all for your advice. I added pumpkin to his food last week, and that really helped. Also used a little parmesan on the white rice so he would eat it and that worked too, he ate the rice happily. I put water in it so it would be easy to eat, so he got the "rice water" suggested too!
Yesterday I added a little Solid Gold Millenia kibble to his chicken, to begin the transition. I have had no luck with the puppy kibble so the breeder suggested moving right to the adult food. This AM he had runny stools, and some straining with a little watery drip, and then when I fed him brown rice (just began this today, for more nutrition) he threw it all up 5 minutes after eating it. I am buying the Wellness puppy food to try - it is quite different than the Solid Gold in what it uses for meat and fiber, so maybe it will agree with him more. But, has anyone else had all these problems? My other dog ate everything and anything, so this is all new for me! Thanks again.

Lily
Whose bed?? Why- would YOU think- that? |
| Barked: Wed Jul 8, '09 5:26pm PST | | | | | | Stella, that was my post about the white rice. When Lily had colitis, oatmeal and brown rice were too coarse and irritating for her. Instant diarrhea, no matter how long they were cooked. White rice, a certain kibble and canned SD I/D were all she could handle. | | | | |

If you think- it's yours, its- mine!!

| Barked: Wed Jul 8, '09 10:25pm PST | | | | | | I have had my pups on Innova, Timberwolf, EVO, Eukanuba, and Blue Wilderness. They are currently on Wilderness which has a good helping of meat, around 44% protein. Their stool from Wilderness is rock solid, I've had no luck with other foods that I have tried without additional supplimentation. I dont think it is necessarily the meat content, but rather your dogs digestive system, health, and nutritional needs.
But its good to hear that you found a food that is good for your dog, cheers.

Ryro

| Barked: Thu Jul 9, '09 12:59am PST | | | | | | I guess what it is with some dogs is the richer the food the looser the poop. Ryro has always had the same problem. When I had him on pedigree briefly his poo went solid in an instant! It was crazy! He's on Go! Natural Grain-free and had mashed potato type poop but now it's getting better as we cut down the amount from 2 cups to 1 - 1 & 1/4 cup (I know a big leap) but because the food is so rich and high in protein (42%) he's not lessening nutritional value. He also gets 25% of treats added to his diet since I work on his obedience/training everyday. I also tried The Missing Link Canine Supplement and the first two weeks his poop was SO RUNNY! I then went back and tried it again but starting off really slow with half of a teaspoon (it recommends 2 teaspoons) and the past couple days his poop is actually quite solid. I'm not going to give him any more than 1 teaspoon as it is quite high in fibre and it also has protein in it so he's actually getting 65% protein out of his food. | | | | |

| Barked: Thu Jul 9, '09 6:08am PST | | | | | | I fed Jib chcken, rice and pumpkin yesterday after 12 hours of no food and he is now fine. The Solid Gold Millenia did not agree with him at all, I guess. I am considering doing a home cooked diet - anyone have good websites for that? | | | | |
