Max

Somewhere there- is something I- can eat..

So we recently switched to Healthwise from Innova. Now, while Max didn't have firm stools on Innova, he never really had diarreah on it, either (an improvement). With our recent financial situation (husband is currently unemployed) we've had to switch foods. We went with Healthwise because it's still made by Natura and I really loved the Innova. Healthwise is almost a full dollar a day cheaper to feed (total among all 4 dogs) than the Innova was. So, in a nutshell, Max actually has firm poo. MAX has FIRM poo!! This is the first time in his life! Now, I know Healthwise has a bit of a lower meat content and I'm wondering if that is why? Seems odd, since I know so many pups have done well switching to grain free foods with regards to firming up poo. Just wondering what you all think?

Gunner

I solemnly swear- that I am up to- no good

Same thing has happened with me. Gunner was on a 100% raw diet and his poops were fantastic. But due to financial situations, time management and other issues we had to switch him to kibble. I wanted to stay with the grainfree diets, so I tried a few.. EVO for 1 month with a little more firm poo but still runny, Innova Red Meat for about 2 months with more firm poo but more liquid than solid and now he's on Wellness Small Breed with wonderful firm, small poos. shrug

I don't think so. On Diamond Naturals, which has one meat source, Cookie always had somewhat watery poop. On Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, she's been having firm poops.
Depends on the dog, methinks.

ETA:
Just read the rest of the thread, and I think Sedona's thought makes the most sense. Fiber. Yeah.

O ya m0re fiber for sure I agree. Some dogs just dont do well with the higher protein more meaty kibbles. Its not for every dog. My sisters boxers do excellent on Canidae als but they cant eat Orijen or high protein foods. They get upset tummies so whatever works.way to go

I have a 4 mo old fox terrier who is having problems with soft stools, and his breeder said that is sounds to her like it's because I am feeding a high quality food (Solid Gold puppy) with 28% protein, which she felt could be too much protein for him. So, you can add that to your thinking! I am currently working with the vet, but nothing is helping so I will try transitioning to a lower protein kibble.

Whose bed?? Why- would YOU think- that?

Less meat = more rice = better poo. Rice is good for loose stools.

Jib, if you have much SG left, overcook some white rice and add it to each meal. It will cut down on the protein, but it will give him rice's benefits. I have read if you overcook in a lot of water and just serve the water, that helps, too. I haven'y tried it. That's one remedy I missed when Lily had colitis.

thanks! I will try that and see if it helps. He doesn't like rice much - can i substitute oatmeal (cooked) or mashed potatoes?

No oatmeal for now. Potatoes ?? He can have potatoes, but I'm not sure they's help firm things up. I'd stay with the rice. Ocercook it so it doesn't feel the grains and sprinkle on a smidgeon of Parmesan cheese. Dogs have lots of smell receptors, but not many taste buds. The cheese does a great job of enticing a dog to eat things they think they don't they like. Lily is a fussy eater. P cheese does wonders.

BTW, it's regular plain white rice. Skip the instant rice.
