Sedona,
I have only one question. Initially in selecting a great dog food for me, mom did all kinds of research and found a formula showing that a canine needed approximately 30 kcal per pound of body weight. For me that's 1110 kcal a day at my ideal weight of 37 pounds. There was some long formula (mom lost it after she figured it out). Using your formula it shows that I would only need 574 kcal per pound of ideal body weight. So mom's question is where did you find out the information on kcal nutritional needs and the formula. I'm at my ideal weight, but whenever mom switches food she always adjusts it according to the kcal per pound in the foods.

Just want to clear this up since apparently I'm eating twice what I should and not gaining weight. Currently eating Wellness Ocean Core (1 1/3 cups per day). Mom's really confused. HELP!!!

Timmy -

I don't know what formula your mom used, but it sounds way off (no offense!) A 100 pound human can sustain on 1200 kcal a day, so for you as a 37 pound dog to need 1110 kcal would be outragoues!

Sedona's formula showed 574 kcal for you, right? Well, that's pretty much what you're getting in your 1 1/3 cup of Wellness CORE Ocean a day. It's 430 kcal per cup. 430 + (430 x 0.3) = 559 kcal a day. Which is pretty close to what Sedona's formula showed.

Thanks Bailey,
No offense taken. For some reason, mom was feeding me the right amount, but her formula was sure off. Good thing mom doesn't need much math for her job!!!! BOL

I'll be sure to take the information to my local pet food store and maybe it will help them educate some dog owners to the cost benefits of feeding a higher quality food.

Thanks again for the clarification.

Hiker - Adopted!!

Hummm.

I did the formula. I also feed Hiker ToTW Wetlands and Hikes should weigh about 55 lbs. My amount came out similar to Bailey's. Approximately a 15 lb bag a month? But I seem to be feeding him about twice that...

(55/2.2) x 30 + 70 = 820 Calories per day

15 lbs x 1704 Cal/lb = 25 560 Cal

$21.99/25 560 = $0.00086 per Cal

$0.00086 x 820 = $0.71/day = $21.16/month

It's not like he is particularly active, but to maintain his weight I am feeding him about four cups a day! That about 1500 Calories! Which is more like $38.70. shrug

Jade, 5 cups? Whoa, lol! I think Canidae is a great choice for you. As for the amount, as long as she’s healthy and not overweight then you’re feeding the right amount for her. You’ll probably feed less than 5 cups on the Canidae though so when you’re switching pay attention to see if she’s getting chubby or getting skinny and adjust from there.

Gretchen, don’t forget to use the 20% coupon code if you haven’t already. If all of you guys are at a healthy weight: Gretchen needs 1161, Bailey needs 1025, and Max needs between 684 and 752.

The formula I used was posted by Rudy a few pages back. When I find the thread I’ll post the link. Anyway, like I said before there are lots of calorie calculators out there. Sedona actually needs a little more calories than this equation says. It’s just a starting out point. Here’s a calorie calculator… http://www.mycockerspaniel.com/mer.htm

Hey Hiker, if you were a human you'd be one of those who can eat everything under the sun and still not gain weight.big grin Your humans might be better off, money wise, if they can find a food that's higher in calories. Doesn't hurt to shop aroundwink

You're very handsome by the waycheer

Fungi, BH

What do you mean- I'm not a lap- dog???

I had to finally get something higher in calories for Fungi. He should be (according to the formula) be getting around 1345 calories per day. He has a really high metabolism though so I've been giving a little more...I started them on NV Instinct rabbit. I think we're going to stick with their foods for a while. So far, so good. The other pups are doing well with their weight and Fungi has picked up a couple more pounds. snoopy

Thanks Sedona!

I think you are right, and believe me, Hiker definitely TRYS to eat everything under the sun.

I am silly and I keep buying the 15lb bag every couple of weeks because I am convinced that he is going to get adopted and I'll be stuck with a bunch of dog food that the shelter dogs can't eat.

Maybe I'll change foods next bag, but I just bought a new one today! wave

Is there a different formula for small dogs?

Because it says on the bag to feed nikki 2/3 cups (she eats Innova Adult). From the calculation she's supposed to be eating 200 kcals/day (9.5/2.2*30+70) But 2/3 cups a day is 371 kcals :S She's not overweight but I'm kind of confused by this.

Also is this calculation only valid for grain, grain-free, or both?
