Great thread. My starving Corgi thanks you from the bottom of her heart. I read the servings suggestion on the bag of Blue incorrectly and have been feeding her about a cup too little.

Thanks for this post! I've been feeding the dogs Orijen and Before Grain forever anyway, but this helped me to figure some things out about the cost.

Our two little dogs eat so little anyway, it doesn't really matter what cost their food is. Our 88lb doberman though, on Orijen we burn through 1 bag in less than one month. Using your calculations, it costs us $620USD a year (Orijen Senior) compared to just $251.66 if he was on Beneful. That's more than $30 a month more.

Still, that's a price we're more than willing to pay. smile

just wanted to add my thanks to sedona for all that hard work - very helpful. I didn't realize the differences would be so little, so now I'm not going to worry about how much I'm spending to feed my dogs!

Before I came to live with my new person, I ate Royal Canin for Chihuahuas. I eat Innova now. With the Royal Canin, she was told to feed me 2/3 cup a day. With Innova, 1/2 cup is just perfect.

Innova is tastier too! When she tried to gradually switch me over, I was picking out and eating only the Innova.

She wanted to switch me to Evo at first, but the guy at the pet food store said it might be a little too high in calories for me. Since I'm getting older, I have to work harder to maintain my boyish figure. Maybe that's why we sprint at the end of our walks. big grin

Ok, I'm late but here it goes:
Innova: 1895 * 30=56850
$49/56850=0.0008619

Now

Max: 0.0008619*1025=0.88/day (rounded) $322/yr
Xena: 0.0008619*752=0.65 /day $237/yr
Sam: 0.0008619*820=0.71/day $258/yr
Fred: 0.0008619*247=0.21/day $78/yr

for a grand total of $2.45 /day and $895 / year.. Oh I am so proud of myself! Thanks Sedona for explaining that so well!

Now, Does anypup happen to know what the calories are in Kirklands dog food? DH is adamant that we cut costs in dog food (we have cut everywhere else already and times are still tough right now) and DH thinks Kirkland's is the solution. HELP!

That said, I would really rather not switch to a brand like Kirklands from Innova... my Innova is about $49 per 30lb bag... I am open if anypup has a suggestion of something that would be cheaper to feed but still excellent quality. DH doesn't like grainless, but that could be negotiable...

Thanks in advance foodies!

snoopy

edited to add, yes, sadly it did take me an hour to figure this all out, although a lot of that time was spent googling Kirkland's.. big grin
