So I'm a little bit confused about something. I just bought Aveda a bag of California Naturals Rice and Lamb Meal (the low fat kind, didn't realize there were two different varieties, got the wrong one). She is 40 lbs, so according to the original post, she needs about 616 calories/day. The bag says there are 317 kcal/cup in this food. (I believe kcal=cal right?) So that would mean she needs about 1.95 cups/day. According to the bag a 40 lb dog needs 3 1/8 cups/day. shock How is this so? I understand if it has to do with the "low fat" formula, but why? So how much should I be feeding her? She is the perfect weight right now and is only moderately active.

A dog food rep told Mom it was because they have to make sure the most active dog eating that food will get enough calories... We have two poodles, exact same weight, age, etc. One eats 2 cups/day, the other eats 3/4 cup per day. Bag says for their weight they should have 2 1/2 to 3 cups per day. Hope this helps???

Bella, you'll have to see if 118 calories is enough to fill you up when you get that old. You may need more, you may need less on those foods. There's no way to know for certain until that time comes.

Hey Kinnick, it all looks right to me. NB is pretty stinkin' pricey ain't it?!

Aveda, companies always tell you to feed more than your supposed to (for the average dog). Your pup might very well need more than 616 calories per day (she is still kinda young after all). You might even find that she'll need lots more calories on one food and significantly less on another formula. It's definitely a know thy dog kind of thing. I would go ahead and try the 616 (or however many calories she's currently eating) and pay attention to her body condition. Then adjust from there if you need to. Here are two other calorie calculators in case you feel the 616 is too low of a number to start out with.

Timberwolf's has a bunch of their formulas on sale right now. Its a really good price and the shipping is cheap too.

They've also got a competition going on when you send a picture of your pet you can win a free bag of food.

Good Dog Food For Those On A Budget I think.

i love math, but this one made my head spin!

i'm on a budget now thanks to job layoff, but i figured instead of spending money on bad food for me (cookies, ice cream, that stuff), i'm putting it toward Audrey's food. it will be better for both our health!

i'm also doing more home baking, both for me and for her, due to cost, for both our treats. she loves it -- it's like a special thing we do together.
