To address Amber, Purina products were indeed recalled.
The two food I feed most often, Innova Evo and Merrick canned, were no where near the recall list. Evo uses no grains, hence, no recall on grain products. Merrick uses all human grade ingredients, so again, no recall.
Having said that, I don't think that is a fair guide. I do not for one second believe that any of the companies effected by the recall would have deliberately used tainted ingredients.
But what so many are saying is so true. For a small increase in price (pennies per week), it is easily possible to feed a better quality food, so I believe it all comes down to choice.
Sadly, I know many people who continue to feed poor quality foods for a variety of reasons and I know many people who have switched to better quality foods and would never go back.
My family's old dog lived to be nearly 17 and she always ate Alpo, Moist n Meaty, Gravy Train, Gaines Burger and similar types of foods her whole life. Does this mean I think those are good foods? No way! Would I feed my dogs those foods now? Never!
Just because some dogs happen to live long lives despite being fed poor quality diets does not mean those are good food choices.
Wow when i posted this question i had no idea that it would lead to such a big discussion or that people had such strong opinions on what other people should feed their dogs.
I really only wanted to know why exactly Beneful was bad and that was answered way back on page one.
I guess what i just want to say is that i do not believe it is cruel for people to feed their dogs Beneful or any of the other foods that people perceive to be bad. Maybe its a bad choice but cruel? No.
We are at the moment feeding Bomber Beneful. But after reading all these posts & getting some idea how unhealthy it is, have decided to switch to something else. Although its not easy for us here in Adelaide to come across all the good foods that are mentioned i believe it is worth the effort to find them so that Bomber can be as healthy as possible. Beneful may not kill him but thats a risk im not willing to take.
I have owned dogs for 50 years and like my Dad, I fed Purina. We had long lived, healthy, activeEnglish Setters and ointers, later Irish Settes and Godlen Retrievers. Right now my golden mix who is 6 1/2 is on Purina One and she is in perfect healhty--depsite having heart worms when we adopted her--and her cot is beautiful. My almost 9 yer old golden is on Tate of the Wild High Prairie, but I got the Wetlandsformula this time, but haven't started her on it. She is no healtheir than she was on the Purina One senior--has an ear infection right now, but her allergies are enviromental.
On the golden retriever forums most do feed at leat mid grade food, but there a a few dogs who do not do well on it and do better on plain old Purina DogChow. One of my goldens couldn't handle the higher grade food, but did marvelous on the plain od DogChow. I lost him almost a yer ago at age 12 1/2 to heart attack--he had never been sick a day in his life til heart attack took him. Heart attack took hisbrother 8 years earlier at age 5. We were to find bad hearts were common--tho we didn't know it til later --in that family of dogs. We wre actually lucky to have had Buck as long as we did and eating different foods would not have made a difference. In fact may have made things worse as the better froods made him sick.
I am not saying feed cheap foods to your dogs, but I know sometimes dogs can't tolerate the "better foods" and I have seen to many dogs live way beyond ife expectancy on Purina, Pedigree, etc I think you just have to do with what your dog does best on and what you can afford..
I've seen humans live way beyond their life expectancy eating terrible foods everyday and smoking and drinking their entire life. Doesn’t mean we should all live like that though. Most of us wouldn't last too long.
That was pretty rude. There is no need to be nasty. The posts here are for people to give their opinions - and that happens to be mine.
Everypup,
I am aware of the horse feed being recalled recently. Sadly one of my Vets lost a horse this week. So sad because we were petting her just last weekend. She is furious because the dealer lied and said it wasn't recalled.
Not all dogs tolerate everything. We've tried so many different brands, including Merrick. We either don't like it, or we get the major runs. No fun with a furry butt covered in poop, and I don't want to be butt washed every day.
We do like Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul dry, and we get that for breakfast. We've tried other things and we hate it.
My sister and I are also both street dogs from Puerto Rico. Satos survive by eating garbage or whatever we can fnd. I was chained on a porch for 5 months and thrown whatever the human felt like giving me. I was beat for peeing and pooing and never walked. We don't know Gypsy's history - she was found wandering skinny and dirty.
Perhaps our puppyhoods is why we don't like/or can't tolerate certain things.
Perhaps if you check out our kitty brother Morgan the Pirate Gato's Catster Page you will understand our family more.
