I have a human daughter who is a picky eater, and she would be overjoyed if I fed her pancakes with real maple syrup for 1/2 her meals, and ice cream and Burger King the rest of the time. But I obviously don't do that..even if it would save me a lot of battles and all this grey hair.

I have a picky dog and I feel horrible feeding Royal Canin mixed with my home cooking, but thats as low as I will go with kibble. She is starting to eat more Canidae now that she is getting big enough to chew it so eventually I will be able to make that switch. I was hoping Honest Kitchen would work out but i am not sure thats happening. What she REALLY wants is Burger King and my daughter's pancakes... but I just cant do that. She might love Beneful with all its sugar and prosessed flavors, since she seems to crave junk food...

But just as I wont raise my humans on poor nutrition, I wont raise my dogs on it either.

I dont think that's the point. I'm a very lucky person in that I can east fast food, pop, candy, stuff filled with preservatives, whatever I want and I do not gain a pound, I'm very slender, and dont have health problems (well, that arent genetic anyway!). But do I eat those things all the time? No. I like to know I'm eating things that are good for me, not just things that make me look good. If I have a choice between apple flavored Laffy Taffy and an actual apple, what should I pick? Both keep my appearance the same but I'm going to take the one that's not filled with junk.

I'd never blast anyone for feeding only what they can afford or only what's available in their area (trust me, I lived in a rural place) or because their dog has very unique health needs but if you can feed something a little better, why not?

I agree Rudy. Like I said earlier we've all heard of the dog who is healthy eating a Beneful or Kibbles 'n Bits and live to 16, and we've all heard of the old guy who smokes, drinks, and eats like crap. Those are usually the exception and not the rule. I still just don't see how an argument for a product like Beneful being healthy.

That's all about genetics. Waylon must be a genetic freak. laugh out loud That's a good thing of course. I reckon that he's an exception not a rule though.

Sedona did fine on Purina One and Iams. Sure she didn't eat everyday and had eye boogers and a dry-ish coat, but I didn't really notice. I didn't know that it wasn't normal for a dog to throw up and get the splarts often. I thought that was normal. I didn't realize how soft and wonderful her coat could have been on a different food. She coat wasn’t bad. I honestly thought eye boogers were just a part of life. I didn't know why she wasn't eating, but she'd been like that since she was 7-8 weeks old (grew up on Iams). When we decided to give Orijen a shot, I just hoped that she would eat it everyday. What I got was a dog who gobbled down her food, whose eye boogers cleared, whose energy went up a tonconfused, whose coat soften so much that I'm still amazed and I rub my face in it daily, and who hasn't thrown up or had splarts in a long while (well, last week or so she got sick, but she ate some treats that has been recalled. Ugh, stupid Global).

If we were still feeding Iams and Purina One, she'd still be healthy. She was never unhealthy. She just wouldn't be doing as well as she is now. Waylon may be even healthier if he ate a better food, maybe not. But he wouldn't be getting an onslaught of chemicals daily if he ate a better food. All the sugar, by-products, and ground yellow corn aside, it’s the chemicals in Beneful that are bad. Those might affect his health down the line.

Beneful is made out of byproducts. But, there are some people who cannot afford better food. Its better to feed a low quality food than no food at all! I suggest reading Sedona's Guide. And try reading the back of the Beneful bag. I actually fed Beneful to Eagle when I first got him. As soon as I read the ingredients I switched. He was only a pup, but vomited after eating a lot. But, if Beneful works for you, then go ahead and feed it!

OMD I was trying to find a low priced food that is better quality than beneful.. when I stumbled across the "Beneful healthy harvest". I just want to show that when people say " its all I can afford" I think if they researched they could find something a little better for about the same cost) Prices and food were at petsmart.com.

beneful healthy harvest ingredients:

Ingredients: Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), soy protein concentrate, soybean meal, pearled barley, brewers rice, tricalcium phosphate, sugar, water, animal digest, sorbitol, phosphoric acid, salt, potassium chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, calcium carbonate, sorbic acid (a preservative), dried spinach, dried sweet potatoes, dried apples, dicalcium phosphate, choline chloride, calcium propionate (a preservative), DL-Methionine, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6), zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

OK so thats 18.99 for 31.1 pounds for a dog that weighs: 36 - 50 lb. they recommend feeding 2 2/3 - 3 1/3 cups
.............................................................. .....

For $30.99 for 40 pounds you can get ( for a 35 - 55 lbs. dog feed 1-2/3 – 2-1/3 cups ) So thats about a cup less a day, which will easily even the gap in pricing.

Nutro natural Choice Chicken meal, rice and oat:

Ingredients: Chicken Meal, Rice Flour, Ground Rice, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Soybean Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Oatmeal, Natural Flavors, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Potassium Chloride, Dried Egg Product, Dried Kelp, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Taurine, Ferrous Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Niacin, Garlic Flavor, Manganese Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Vitamin A Supplement, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Chondroitin Sulfate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid.

I used to feed Beneful before I got Fungi...
Romeo had dry skin and walked around with an almost constant ear/yeasst infection. I always thought that the ear issues were just a "Cocker thing". When I got Fungi, I went to a place closeby and they steered me toward a better food. I started them on Verus and Romeo had fewer issues. I'd never feed Beneful again. Since being on better foods, Romeo has had FAR fewer ear issues and dry skin. And Fungi has grain allergies so...

I remember when I used to be able to eat a diet of junk too...Not anymore. At least not nearly as much. I'm lucky that I have good genes too but there is a limit now. It really stinks too because I love chips and sweets! Up until I hit 32 I was always underweight (except for when I was in the military and when I was 3 months pregnant...).

I almost consider it cruel to feed a dog something like Beneful, Pedigree, or Dog Chow, if you know how bad the ingredients are. It doesnt matter if your dog "appears" healthy. Responsible parents dont feed their kids Mcdonalds and hot dogs everyday, responsible pet owners should be aware what they are feeding their dogs.
