That is why Dad makes his own beer. He knows exactly what is in it. He can even tell you how much you can make per year for your own personal use (which is a lot more than you would think) without crossing any legal or ethical lines. Plus, it isn't that hard to make.

Then again, Mom likes to joke that he's a beer snob.

Mom is off to check her flaming hot cheetos.

Maybe we should start a list of food that contain BHA/BHT so we know what to avoid. Or on second thought maybe the list would be shorter if we just listed safe foods...confused

Daisy, it isn't that hard to make. Dad has a big pot that he uses and he cooks it in the kitchen, then it goes into a 5 gallon bucket to ferment. He checks the gravity at specific intervals, then it gets bottled. It is hops, malt, water and yeast.

Dad can make light, pale stuff or dark Guinness like stuff depending on what he wants at that time. He's entered a few beer competitions.

It takes less work than making wine. Mead (sorta like a honey wine) takes the most work and the longest to finish.

Homemade beer would be the way to go, but you can get beer that doesn't have preservatives -- you just have to look for it. Chances are your standard big-name-ers like Budweiser and Miller will be out.

My co-worker went to a health conscious child rearing convention a while back. Part of the "goodie bags" were packs of All-Bran Bites, which she brought to work with her. What garbage! They're all sugar and -- you guessed it -- BHA/BHT. She was shocked that these would have been pushed at an event about natural health and wellness, but I have to admit it didn't surprise me one bit! Blech. If the chemical preservatives in cereal and granola bars isn't bad enough, the fact that 99% of them are various incarnations of sugar is a great reason to just skip that aisle at the grocery store completely!

BHA is in a lot of meats. Most jerky has it. In fact, most meats have it. A lot of products made with milk will also contain BHA and BHT. Egg products have BHT usually. I read this online. Its really gross!

BHA and BHT are antioxidants. They are used to keep fats from becoming rancid. Both have been tested for safety.
