So today I was munching on some Quaker Granola Bites and watching a movie when I happened to turn over the bag and look at the ingredients (out of habit!).

To my surprise, Quaker uses BHT as a preservative in their foods... human foods! GROSS!! I'm definately writing them a letter letting them know how disgusted I am that they would use such an ingredient, and I am no longer buying anything by Quaker.

Here is a picture of what the bag looks like... as you can see Gunner is grossed out too!

Blehh!!!

Does anybody else know of any human foods that have BHA/BHT in them?

Yep, a lot of cured meats use BHA... such as many brands of pepperoni, and a lot of frozen sausage. I try to steer clear for both myself and my pets but sometimes it'll still slip in there without us realizing.

I remember Johnsonville Bratwurst uses BHA/BHT as a preservative. Sad, since they are so good.

A lot of packaged meat products use it. I'm very suprised that Quaker uses it. I mean come on, it's friggin oatmeal!

Love that picture of Gunner. That cracked me up!

A lot of cereals have BHT in them, too! It's awful! I was so surprised when I found out-- it's in a whole bunch of snacks. I don't buy anything that has BHT in it (or that has BHT in the packaging), but that definitely took out a lot of name brand products!

I found this on About.com

What foods contain BHA and BHT?

BHA is generally used to keep fats from becoming rancid. It is also used as a yeast de-foaming agent. BHA is found in butter, meats, cereals, chewing gum, baked goods, snack foods, dehydrated potatoes, and beer. It is also found in animal feed, food packaging, cosmetics, rubber products, and petroleum products.

BHT also prevents oxidative rancidity of fats. It is used to preserve food odor, color, and flavor. Many packaging materials incorporate BHT. It is also added directly to shortening, cereals, and other foods containing fats and oils.
