| Barked: Thu Mar 22, '07 10:29pm PST | | | | | | Our hearts go out to all the families who are suffering due to the negligence of Menu Foods. We currently rotate our canned foods that are mixed in with kibble, and Innova Evo (Natura) and Prairie (Nature's Variety) are among the foods we use. We have sent E-mail to each company and will post the responses. We will not continue to purchase any foods produced by Menu, they will not be getting our money.
The other food in the rotation is Fromm, and here is the statement found on their website - http://frommfamily.com/contact-recall-info.php -
Fromm products are NOT affected by the Menu can pet food recall
In regards to the recent recall of canned pet foods, Fromm Family Foods want to re-assure all of our existing customers and any customer considering a Four-Star product that all of our canned dog and cat foods are produced WITHOUT the use of any binders such as wheat gluten, and are not made by Menu Foods who has been a major supplier to to pet trade for many years. While we feel this is a major issue concerning the entire industry, no one manufacturer can underestimate the magnitude of issues like these, which is why we are doing our part to communicate what is in our products to our distributors, retailers, and customers. As such, we feel it is more important than ever to insist on producing our canned products using only the finest ingredients made in facilities fit for human consumption. We have based our entire manufacturing process on fibrous muscle meat production and the use of fresh vegetables combined in a Grain Free formulation.
* Key Points Fromm Four-Star cans are NOT made by Menu Foods
* Four-Star cans are produced in a human food plant without the use of wheat gluten or other grains
* All Four-Star cans are made with 100% pure meat, duck, chicken and fish, NOT reformed meat
* Fromm Family Foods does not use any by-products in our dog and cat foods
* Fromm Family Foods does not test on animals
* Fromm products are all-natural. Products made with binders to make reformed meat and products which use wheat gluten are NOT considered all-natural by our standards
We sincerely regret this has affected so many of us in both the pet food industry and especially the pet owners themselves who have experienced this directly.
Prior to rotating we were feeding only Merrick canned food, but have stopped after the questionable website started to appear on their kibble bags, as we did not want to support that with our money either.

| Barked: Fri Mar 23, '07 4:53am PST | | | | | | I have something to share.
Cinci (my dog walker's 12 year old pomeranian) is Cujo's best buddy. Cinci has a hard time eatting and Carol (my dog walker) started to feed Cinci his normal dry ID food HOWEVER, because Cujo HATES the gravy in his pouch food since he was a puppy - rather than squeezing and draining the gravy for Cujo she would squeeze it/drain it but mix it with Cinci's food so he would eat vs throwing it away. She has been doing this for months (started around NOve/Dec).
Yesterday Cinci was admitted to the vet hospital. Cinci had pancreatitis as it is and for the last two months has been in and out and yesterday started to vomit every 5 min. The last 5 times or so Conci started to vomit blood. Blood was also in his stool. He is going for tests and I am bringing Carol to see him this morning.
I started thinking this morning (actually woke up at 5AM and could not sleep again) wondering since Cujo's pouches have all been recalled specifically on the list and though his blood work came back OK - knowing he does NOT eat the gravvy and I drain it and wash it off - and knowing that Cinci loves the gravy and has been consuming it twice a day for months - could it be possible that the GRAVY could have made Cinci relapse and have all of these medical problems?? Could it be the actuyal gravy and not the actual "meat" or chunks? It is so strange. I know - I am jumping all over here - but i cant help but wonder. The reason I am also going with carol is because I want to talk to the vet about it. He doesnt know that Cinci ate the gravy from the affected packs yet (I asked her this morning if she told him this).
It is just ironic that they recalled the food that has their gravy in it - chunks and gravy. Strange.

Fri Mar 23, 11:42 AM
ALBANY, N.Y. - Rat poison has been found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday.
Spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden would not identify the chemical or its source beyond saying it was a rodent poison.
The Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation was focusing on wheat gluten in the food. Wheat gluten itself would not cause kidney failure, but the common ingredient could have been contaminated by heavy metals or mold toxins, the FDA said.
State agriculture officials scheduled a news conference Friday afternoon to release laboratory findings from tests on the pet food conducted this week.
The deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.
Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.
Menu Foods is majority owned by Menu Foods Income Fund of Streetsville. The company also makes foods for zoo cats, but those products are unaffected by the recall.
The company's chief executive and president said Menu Foods delayed announcing the recall until it could confirm that the animals had eaten its product before dying. Two earlier complaints from consumers whose cats had died involved animals that lived outside or had access to a garage, which left open the possibility they had been poisoned by something other than contaminated food, he said.
A spokesman for New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said he was not aware of any criminal investigation involving the tainted food.
A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was posted online by Menu Foods and is available at http://tinyurl.com/2pn6mm. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.

| Barked: Sat Mar 24, '07 6:05am PST | | | | | | You know, aside from all of the innocent pet owners losing their beloved children, the worst part of this will be that Menu Foods will probably get nothing more than a slap on the wrist for literally killing possibly thousands of dogs and cats. Had this been tainted people food, and that many babies or people had died from it (and thank God is wasn't), they would be looking at criminal charges. But since it's just "animals"....well, I'm sure the punishment will be consierably less.
I would like to offer my heartfelt sympathies for anyone and everyone who have been affected by this henious crime. Every time I see that picture of that Yorkshire Terrier Pebbles, my eyes well up. I really can't imagine the hurt and anguish that so many loving pet owners are enduring right now. But I can say that my prayers are with you all.
God Bless. | | | | |

| Barked: Sat Mar 24, '07 6:57pm PST | | | | | | THIS WAS ON DOGSTER ABOUT A YEAR AGO..i feed bella INNOVA......i also mix just 1/3 table spoon of soft food and she will eat ..now i am so glad i got this email and changed the dog and cats food...My mothers pom was also just recommended to take ID perscription diet...i have been trying to talk her out of it..it is not on the recall list but just is not the best healthy choice..
Also know that VETS get huge kick backs from selling science diet..and they company comes in and pushes their product and has selling contest..there are many in the forums who work at vets offices and are telling this story...i have always believed they pushed it because it was a good food...but they are not required to take nutrition in vet school...so they are not all knowing...
hope this helps...hugs and kisses to all
How to grade your dog/cat's food: (Some brands are done at the very bottom)
Start with a grade of 100:
