Just because a company's food is not "affected by" or "involved in" the recall, DOES NOT mean their food isn't made by Menu Foods. I've been calling companies and those whose wet food is not made by Menu Foods say so up front. Those whose wet food IS made by Menu Foods skirt around the issue by saying "none of our food is affected by (or involved in) the recall."
The ONLY way to know if a company uses Menu Foods to manufacture their wet food is to call or email them and ask them: "WHO manufactures your wet food?" There are only a handful of wet food manufacturers:
Three largest wet food manufacturers:
Menu Foods (makes 80% of the wet food on the market)
Simmons (located in the South; formerly DBA Allied)
American Nutrition (in Utah)
A couple of smaller wet food manufacturers:
Merricks (in Texas, though mostly only make their own food now)
Evangers (in Illinois, also makes mostly their own food, and a handful of others whom the V.P. was not at liberty to divulge)
Nestle Purina is the one exception among the mega-companies that sells pet food in that they, for all intents and purposes, make their own food (they do their own packing). The exception is, of course, the Mighty Dog pouches, which are on the recall.
As for dry food...
---Diamond is the largest manufacturer and outsources to several well-known companies (e.g., Natural Balance) They also make their own. Diamond was the subject of a dry food recall last year, due to an aflatoxin contamination from corn.
--American Nutrition (Utah) also makes dry food, but at a separate plant from where the wet food is made.
--Blue Seal also makes dry food (e.g. for 'by Nature' and other companies).
REGARDING THE "WHEAT GLUTEN".......I've seen post after post here and elswhere from people who think that just because the food they are feeding doesn't have wheat gluten that it is safe. Just YESTERDAY both the FDA and MENU FOODS' CEO admitted that they simply do not know what the toxin is -- Menu Foods says that wheat gluten is their "best guess" but have no evidence that it is in fact the wheat gluten which is the source of contamination. Considering this, I myself (and I'm advising all my clients) to NOT USE ANY food manufactured by MENU FOODS until the actual source of the poisonings has been identified. This is why I am contacting all the companies and asking them if Menu Foods makes any of their foods.

Lucy, thank you so much for your informations. I was very nervous after knowing Innova canned was made by Menu Foods which I fed to my dog a year ago. I now feed Evanger's canned to her. She loves it.
I spoke with California Natural and the Natura Pet was not recalled. Thank Dog, cuz that's what I gave Hailee! This is all such a shame. I feel so bad for the animals and families that were affected by this. But it happens with people food too. Spinach, green onions, peanut butter...
Oh my Dog! I just saw Rocky's post. I guess I asked the wrong question. This is terrible! Do they even know if the contamination happened at the Menu plant, or was it ingredients they bought from somewhere else?
Hi all... we've been covering the recall at our blog.
We've set up 2 resources at itchmo.com, 1) a petition to hold all pet food companies responsible for their food and 2) an alert email when there is a new recall or safety alert for pet-related items.
Please spread the word so that we can save more loved ones in the future.
Lucy, Ty for the informative post!! I think it is important also that people realize that "not effected by or not associated with" the recall DOES NOT mean that Menu Foods does not make their food!
Canidae was happy to tell me outright that they make their own kibble & their canned food is made by a "small family owned cannery that deals in organic foods".
