I called the company that makes California Natural, Natura 1-800-532-7261. Their website says they are not affected by the recall.

I was told they make their own dry food, BUT MENU FOODS MAKES THEIR CANNED PRODUCTS!!!

She said their canned food is made at the Nebraska plant, and therefore not affected by the recall. NOT good enough for me.

I will never allow canned dog food in my home again from any company.

Does anyone know if Hill' s (the makers of Science Diet) had recalled any of the canned Prescription Diet food?

Does anyone know anything about the prescription diet food line and if Menu Foods plays a part in distributing those products?

Cujo was prescribed to eat only ID from Presc diet for a week but I am seriously all nerves with it. I feel sick to my stomach feeding him now. Its ridiculous. I actually fear feeding my dog and what is so darn annoying is the fact that I feel like I don't know where to go for help! I call vet - no one knows, you call comnpanies - no one kows... so what the heck do you do???

Roxie - I completely know what you mean about the dogs needling more nutrients along with cooked food. You mentioned your vet indicating that you should purchse good cookbooks... but did they recommend any? If so can you share with us?

Also I purchased at the natural pet food store tablet supplements that they told me you crumble and add to the food for the extra nutrients. I puchased: Earth Aminal (Dr. Bob Goldstein) Daily Health Nuggets for Dogs (Fortified Vitamin/Mineral Supplement.

Apparently dogs who are on a holistic or organic diet take 3 of these little tablets a day (crumbled and mixed in their food) for the supplements that would normally be gained from the regular dog food. The website for the store I visited (who were great people to talk to about this all by the way) is www.earthanimal.com Just an FYI if anyone is interested.

sigh... I wish someone would give answers at these companies though. It is so scary that they cant figure it out. Really scary.
Last month my family cat 's("Winston") brother ("Bootsie") passed away. He had falled ill in December and grew worse as weeks went on. He eventually stopped eatting and drinking and then stopped urinating and lost a lot of weight. When you would try to pet him he was in so much pain. His vet assumed it was feline lukemia because they said that there was (what appeared to be an absess) in his Xray in the gastro intestinal area(?) and he was put to sleep to end his suffering about 3 weeks ago.

My aunt (his mom) was devestated when the news had indicated the food recall. Bootsie only ate Hill's Science Diet wet canned food. Amazingly enough when the recall came out she still had some of his cans in the cabinets and came to find that his cans's codes were those notes in the lots. She contacted the vet and indicated this to the vet. The vet indicated that they decided to put Bootsie down due to the images but never ran the blood work due to the pain Bootsie was in with the assumption it was cancer and due to his age (He was already 16). My Aunt i s not only devestated that she had to put Bootsie down but now is living with the guilt that she caused the pain because she "fed him". I try to talk to her about this and feel so terrible for her. But what is most scary is that the older the dog/cat the vet told me the worse because their bodies are not strong enough to fight the battle.

It makes us all wonder (including her own vet) if Bootsie actually died due to his contaminated food. So sad. Makes me so angry.

Hello Animal Lovers,

I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know about something that I found out today regarding the Menu Foods Dog/Cat Food Recall that you have all probably heard about by now. Seeing that my brand of dog food was on the “list” I contacted Menu Foods after because I wanted to verify that this recall did not apply to dry kibble, which is what all of my animals eat. My new puppy threw up a couple of times last night, which normally wouldn’t alarm me, but in the light of this recall, I became concerned. I spoke with an actual person from Menu Foods, and she took about 10 minutes to collect some information on my specific situation (dog breeds, size, exact type of food, size of the dog food bag, etc.). Initially she indicated that my type of dog food was not included on the recall specifications, however, after collecting my information, she stated that someone would be contacting me within 24-48 hours to give me more information specific to what I had told her. She also indicated that I should DISCONTINUE FEEDING THE DRY KIBBLE TO MY ANIMALS, until I am told otherwise (even though this type was not on the original recall). I am assuming that they are just trying to prevent further lawsuits, and want to cover their bases as much as possible, but I am going to take heed of what she said. In addition, due to my puppy throwing up, she recommended that I contact my vet so that they could make the determination of what his medical needs are. While speaking with my vet, I was informed of what the specific symptoms are.

They included:

v Lethargy

v Listlessness

v Vomiting

v Diarrhea

I also wanted to give you the number for Menu Foods, which incorporates 48 different brands of dog food, and 40 different brands of cat food, ranging from Eukanooba and Science Diet all the way across the board to Special Kitty (Walmart Brand). I would recommend calling the number if your dog food is on the list, or at least pick up a brand that wasn’t identified.

To my knowledge, Eukanuba Veterinary Diet and Hills Prescription foods are not involved in the recall (of course as luck has it, Provo has been on both in the past two weeks). Call your vet to be sure but all of my research has indicated those products are not involved.

Can anyone clarify about the dry kibble???? Provo isn't at risk (he's on Innova and more of the RX food) but my kitty is on Nutro Natural Choice. He's 12 so I don't even want to think about how he'd fare against something nasty.

Two of my dogs get Hills prescription W/D, canned & dry, and
have been eating it for years.
I did ascertain Saturday that the hills PRESCRIPTION DIET has
not been on the recall list. It is safe.
Unless somehow new evidence is uncovered in the future, to my
knowledge until this point in time, it is safe. My two dogs that have
eaten it have had no ill effects, either.
Just to put your mind at ease!!
ALL HILLS PRESCRIPTION DIETS ARE OK.
Even on the NBC nightly news tonight, they interviewed a vet who
was saying vets all across America are thinking that many animals
they've lost to renal failure early this year were probably victims
of the bad food, and they're reviewing all the cases.
There was a big bunch of articles in the e magazine Housepet
and they talked about feeding home cooked food (not raw, but
cooked) what to feed, etc. If anyone wants a copy of that, you
can e mail me privately and I will send it to you.

All my furkids are going on the same food as of Friday, and it's
Natural Balance Duck & Potato (Fluffy Lee loves that!!)
2 out of 3 eat kibble only, and the other one, Pookie, eats a mix
of half and half.
Keeping Winston, Cujo, and all in my prayers still .....

Hi,
I have the name of those cookbooks, they are great! It has all kinds of information on pets health. Good recipes,( Real Food for Dogs )by Arden Moore and( Barkers Grub) by Rudy Edalati.

It tells you all abour the minerals they need. You will add things like Vit-E and C and Bone meal. Really a good source of information. Roxie loves the food and she is doing so much Better!

I really feel better now that I know I can control what goes into her body. You can cook a big batch and freeze it for the whole week.
Good Luck, if anyone else gets these cookbooks let know how you like them. I love them!
