Hi everyone!
Angel, thanks for posting all those FDA # state by state....bless
you/mom for that!
Cujo & Theresa, glad you checked in, oh I was worrying.....
Rocky, praying for you along with any others affected........
Just heard from my friend in California who works in Petsmart...
GET READY FOR THIS......
She said the Nutro rep was in the store, restocking tainted cans
that were returned.....the store owner/manager went up and stopped the representative. Representative said there is no proof
their food is bad, so store owner said you're not putting this stuff
in this store, and out went the representative.
What you all have been writing about needing to check out different
food sources and companies.....YOU ARE RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to pass this info along to other groups...... That is some
kind of incredible.
Even tho Pookie was on Nutro canned & kibble, she's not gotten any
Nutro kibble since the recall, just because.......and for sure she's
never getting anything else beside Natural Balance because it's food
we trust!
God bless each doggie affected by the bad food, and all their families...and all the catsters, too!!

Oh! Fluffy Lee.

That's just pure greed, that rep gets commission from sales.
OH! that makes me so mad! At what cost, our pets lives.
It just shows you how greedy those corporations are, it's all about money, not what's right.

I emailed Wellness (Old Mother Hubbard) yesterday. My question was whether any of their foods are manufactured by Menu Foods. Here is their response:

"We are aware that Menu Foods has initiated a recall. No products made by Wellness & Old Mother Hubbard are affected in any way.

Again, no Wellness, Old Mother Hubbard, or Neura products are part of this recall.

We do use Menu to can some of our foods.

There are two very important factors in determining the quality of a food. The first is the manufacturer. In this case, Menu Foods is a top notch manufacturer that receives excellent scores for food safety and quality systems. They make a consistent product which is exactly what the company asks for. Frankly, they make product for so many companies because they are one of the best.

The second factor is formula. Ingredient selection can make or break product quality. Certain ingredients can be allergens to certain pets. Other ingredients can be sourced for either their quality or their price. Chicken ingredients, for example, can be sourced at various prices. Low ash chicken, which is better for a cat, can be sourced at a higher price. Those are the types of ingredients we use, because they are of higher quality. So I would not assume all companies are created equal. If you'd like to learn more, please call us. We have much more information where that came from!

I am highly disappointed. I feed my cat Wellness canned food and my dogs get their dry Fish & Sweet Potato. I will be changing their foods simply because I cannot continue to feed them with confidence and also because I cannot support a company that supports Menu Foods.

Thanks for posting this! I was about to switch to Wellness today but I don't think so! I don't trust anything that comes through Menu foods right now. I'm homecooking for Annie and the cats and will continue to do so until all this is resolved. There's more to come.

What that person said about how Menu foods contracts with so many companies because they are so reputable - I find this hard to believe. From what I know about contract manufacturing, companies typically go with the lowest bid that can make their product. Of course they are going to look at many factors such as product quality and many other factors before contracting out, but the lowest bid is usually going to win.

I think I am mostly disgusted with the pet food industry and just the food industry in general. Nutrition is at the core of our health. Its sad that our food and our pets' food is being manufactured for the lowest price possibly in disgusting conditions. It makes me think of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. UGH.

I am a little confused, does wellness products manufacture an ingredient that goes in the foods, then it goes to the individual pet food companies and then goes into the foods they are making. I don't feed science diet but my fiance goes to their plant several times a month in Indiana (he services their forklifts), he told me that they are so strict there, he said way more than any people food plant he goes too. I thought they made their food there in indiana, i know they recalled some of their cans. So the ingredient it made then sent on to the individual plants? My fiance also said that science diet is so strict that if one bag of food is open on the skid they trash the whole skid of food. I am just a little confused what menu food does? Any one with any ideas?

OK, just to clarify:

It sounds like Wellness is made at a Menu plant.

However, it does not contain the wheat thought to be the cause of pet deaths.

From what I've learned at the pet food/supply store that I work at, most ultra-premium foods are made at these larger plants simply because the companies that make the foods are too small to have plants of their own. Wellness (and most other ultra-premium brands - remember that Wellness isn't the only brand that does this) is simply not a high-volume seller - because of this, people who make these foods must outsource their production to larger factories who will let them "rent" a spot to make their food. The formula is theirs; the completion of the product often isn't.

We sell a good number of the ultra-premium pet foods at the store that I work at. Of those, two are made in their own factory. I cannot remember which ones are at this moment, but I'll find out later this week and post them back here.

Blake - would you mind passing that phone number along to me? I'd like to call them simply to get more information for my customers.

FDA posts press releases and other notices of recalls and market withdrawals
from the firms involved as a service to consumers, the media, and other
interested parties. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.

P&G Pet Care Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu Foods' Nationwide
U.S. and Canadian Recall of Specific Canned and Small Foil Pouch 'Wet' Cat
and Dog Foods
Contact:
P&G Pet Care
800-882-1591

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Dayton, OH -- March 16, 2007 -- In response to the
recent Menu Foods, Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, P&G Pet Care has
announced a voluntary recall in the United States and Canada on specific 3
oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch
"wet" cat and dog food products manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. Emporia,
Kansas plant with the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant
code 4197. This voluntary recall is part of a larger product recall by Menu
Foods Inc., a contract manufacturer that makes a small portion of canned and
foil pouch 'wet' cat foods for Iams and Eukanuba as well as other non-P&G
brands. There have been a small number of reported cases of cats from the US
(none in Canada) becoming sick and developing signs of kidney failure. The
signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, and lethargy.
P&G Pet Care has received no case reports involving dogs.

This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales
and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the
affected products immediately, and consult with a veterinarian if any
symptoms are present in their pet. All Iams and Eukanuba products carry a
100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled
products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at
1-800-882-1591 or visit www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for details.

To read can product codes, refer to the bottom of the can. The first four
numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following
four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins
with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then
the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located
at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch. The date and plant
codes appear in the third group of numbers, beginning an 11-digit sequence.
See www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for illustrated details.

P&G Pet Care is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution,
because the health and well-being of pets is paramount in the mission of
Iams and Eukanuba. Tests of some affected product have not revealed the
cause of sickness, and testing will continue until a better understanding of
the facts has been achieved. All other canned and small foil wet pouch
products produced at other plants are not affected by this issue. Iams and
Eukanuba "dry" products are not manufactured at Menu Foods and not affected
by this issue. Iams and Eukanuba biscuits, treats and sauces are not
affected by this issue.

P&G Pet Care has informed the Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian
Food Inspection Agency on this issue. The company regrets any inconvenience
to its consumers and retail customers.

Brody,
Thanks for your info on Wellness....and Storm, for your helpful
info also.
I, like many, am sadly learning a lot of distrust of the pet food industry.
I hope to heaven that Wellness canned food does not contain any
of the ingredient that is causing kidney failure......Fluffy Lee eats
a small amount of Wellness Duck & Sweet Potato...purchased because there was no Natural Balance Duck & Potato canned available and I give him his allergy medication in a teaspoon of
canned food every day, plus use it to make a "gravy" for his kibble.
I bought two cans of this sometime between Jan & Feb. Wellness
was the name I trusted next to Natural Balance.
Storm, I know you will post anything of help that you find out...
Joy's column on the front page has some interesting posts this morning with regards to this food recall and who is responsible for
what.....
